Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 118566 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number 118566. This is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness from Tow Ready. This wiring harness is designed to fit all models of the Ford Escapes beginning with year 2013. This unit's going to provide your 4-pole flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle that's going to power your trailer signal lights. It can be used with 5-pole, 6- or 7-pole adapters. Those are going to be sold separately.

The benefit of this system is it's a very quick and easy installation. You don't have to worry about cutting or splicing any wires. Everything is just a plug-and-go connection. It's very simple to do. It's going to give you the amount of wiring that you need to make all your connections.

It's going to give you all the plug connectors, the fuse holders, the ring terminals, the screws, zip ties. It's going to come with detailed instructions. Everything you need for a complete installation is included with this kit. Here on the 4-pole flat side, wiring is going to be constructed of 16-gauge bonded wire, 4-pole flat plug here at the end. It's going to include the nice little dust cap that goes over the connection points when the connectors are not being used. That's going to protect those connection points from the elements.

The black box right here with the double-sided adhesive tape on the back side: This is going be a modulite. This is going to ensure that the vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailer's. The power module is going to connect directly to the battery through the wiring, and that's going to help avoid overloading the vehicle's electrical system. When it comes to the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at 4.2 amps per circuit, and tail lights we're looking at 7.5 amps. The installation is quick and easy. What you're going to need to do is locate the connection points.

Those are going to be located behind the driver's side and passenger side tail lights at the rear of your vehicle. The wiring coming out that has the yellow wiring, this is going to go to the driver's side of your vehicle. The end with the green wiring is going to give you some extra wiring, so that way you have enough length to run it to the passenger side of your vehicle. It's got the simple and easy plugin-style plugs. You just make those connections behind the tail lights on both sides. It's going to have a white wire coming out of the box with a ring terminal attached to it. This is going to be your ground connection. It's going to come off the self-tapping screw. You want to make sure to get that secured to a nice, clean surface for a solid ground connection. Once you have that made, you're going to need to use the bundled black wire right here. This is going to connect to the power wire. It's coming out of the black box right here. It's got some exposed wire on the end. You're going to attach a butt connector to this end right here and to one of the exposed ends of the black wiring. The black wiring is then going to run all the way up to the vehicle battery. Inside this package you're going to get a fuse holder. That's going to be the big yellow wire thing right here with the box attached to it. The box is the fuse holder. It's going to come with the included fuse. The fuse holders are going to get cut right in the middle and then one end of the fuse holder is going to connect to the black wiring using a butt connector. All the connectors are included. The other end of the fuse holder is going to get the ring terminal attached to it and that's going to connect to the positive post from the vehicle's battery. It's going to come with a zip tie that's going to allow you to secure any excess wiring or any slack in your wiring, keep it up another way and make for a nice appearance when it comes to your installation. That's going to do it for our review of part number 118566. This is the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness. .

The installation of the trailer hitch went smoothly. However, we were working from the ground with the SUV elevated with jacks. It would be difficult to install the hitch without two people. The wiring was a different story. Fishing the wiring harnass through the taillight housing proved to be very difficult and took up the majority of our time (3 1/2 hours total). 483871

Wiring kit installed per instructions, did take it to a local mechanic with a hoist to run the wiring from back to front which I was not going to fuss around under neath the car, not a good idea for an 82 yr old guy. Have towed my UT trailer and all lights work as supposed to. etrailer has always delivered on time. 441740

Wiring harness and hitch work great. Renee K was able to get the items shipped the Day I ordered them. The installation videos were spot on and really helpful. In fact, the videos were the first thing I watch before deciding what to purchase. Then I searched for the best prices and found that eTrailer.com had them with free shipping. I highly recommend eTrailer.com and will be back if I need another hitch. 203648

After reviewing the installation video my son and I installed the 75758 hitch and 118566 wiring harness on my 2014 Ford Escape. The install was very easy. Others review that stated to install the wiring harness first was spot on. That made installing the harness much easier. I am very pleased with how the hitch is only slightly visible. 370995

Overall, this worked well and I probably saved myself $300-$400 over what the dealer would have charged. The driver side (yellow) wire setup was shorter than I would have liked. I didn't measure it, but it was so short it left me only one location to install the controller box. I would have preferred to put it somewhere else, but I was limited because that config was so short. The video that goes with this harness was very helpful, but as with everything, it's a lot harder to do that it looks. Routing the connectors up through the rear paneling was a challenge. The connectors are pretty big (they have to be) and the places to push them through are pretty small. Then, routing the power wire from the rear up to the battery while keeping it out of the way of the wheels, shocks, springs, and exhaust was another big challenge. It can be done, but give yourself some time to think it through and come up with a plan. Overall, I'd do this again. I'd rather save a few hundred and just deal with a little aggravation. I'm going to buy another harness from them soon for a different vehicle. Great company to deal with. 188479

I thought this harness kit was an excellent choice. I normally get a universal one and cut and splice everything but this one was just like a plug and play device. The only thing was finding a way to route the power wire up the vehicle to the battery. Once that was done I just took my time and some extra zip ties of my own (I'm a little picky) to get all the wiring secured. Very clean install! 88279

2013 Ford Escape

I recently went to a shop to have a trailer hitch and light harness installed on my 13' Ford Escape. After picking up my car and going to pick up the trailer, the lights would not work on the passenger side of the trailer and also the car. Unplug the trailer lights and the car lights would work normal, as soon as I plugged them back in the car lights would go out. After contacting the company that did the install, they claimed that my trailer had a short. I then went and picked up a new trailer lights kit, rewired and installed all brand new lights on the trailer. After plugging it in, same exact issue as before. I contacted the company again and insisted the light harness he installed had to be the issue and he claimed he did everything correctly and left me to figure it out for myself. Being I was certain the issue was in the harness, I found a harness on etrailer that said was for my car. It was received in a very timely manner and I installed it myself the same day. The kit was very easy to install and after completed, I plugged in my trailer and it worked perfectly. I then contacted the company to let him know the harness he originally installed did not have a dedicated power supply and was more than likely the root of the problem. He still seemed stubborn and insisted hes installed them plenty of times the same way on another exact car without problems. He left me with a nonworking light harness and made no effort to fix it after I brought it back multiple times. Had I just went thru etrailer the first time, I would've saved myself a lot of unnecessary grief and valuable time. The moral of the story is; if you are the least bit mechanically inclined, do yourself a favor and do it yourself. The install was super easy and the product was exactly as described. 490766

I found the wiring kit to be fairly easy to install. I did have to use my own butt connectors, the ones provided with the kit are of cheap quality. You'll also need your own pull wire or air tubing like the one used in the video, and large zip ties to secure the box. The kit would be excellent if it included those items and better butt connectors. 261795

Overall, the hitch is robust and installed properly. The final fit to the vehicle is perfect. There is proper clearance to the bumper and exhaust. Aside from having to slightly bend one area of the mounting to make installation possible everything went as planned. The installation instructions for the hitch and wiring kit were correct and helpful. The method provided to fish the fasteners thru the frame rails is awesome. The vehicle wiring kit was very well made and thought out. The fit and connections were perfect. Pic # 1 Side plates that fit over outsides of frame rails were not to spec at the front. The inside dimension was 39.75". The frame rails are 40.50 outside to outside. The front of the plates required some bending before installation. Pic # 2 I welded a 1/4" thick plate to an old Floor Jack to lift the hitch into place because I had no help. I then bolted the hitch to the plate. Pic # 3 Another view of the hitch mounted to the plate. Pic # 4 Shows the 2014 Escape on Jack Stands with about 2" clear under tires. Also shows how I set the hitch onto the floor jack using an overhead hoist. Pic # 5 Shows how to attach chains to the hitch for lifting with a hoist or chain fall. 428411

Snaking the plug pigtails up behind the tail lights was a bit difficult, but doable. Routing the power wire forward to the battery was a PITA, but doable as well. Everything worked as advertised once installation complete. Kit was very well designed and made. 457512

Best made trailer hitch on the market today, I put this trailer hitch on myself with the video on my iPad (easy step by step instructions). Took me a couple of hours to install hitch and wiring harness. Loved how it tucked up under my Ford Escape and all you see is the receiver end of the hitch. Use it today to haul a utility trailer and boat to my favourite fishing holes. Best value for a well built hitch. Thanks e-trailers for the speedy shipping (free by the way) and great product. Have recommended your product to everyone that asked where I got the hitch from. Thanks again. I am sure your product will last longer than this vehicle, and I know I will definitely order your product on my up and coming vehicle purchases. 477466

I knew I probably needed this along with the trailer hitch I ordered for my 2015 Ford Escape. My dad and I installed it over the weekend. Shipping was very fast from the company and I was really happy about free shipping. This wiring is not a one hour project though, especially if you don't have access to a lift. You will definitely at least need a jack and two people. There wasn't enough wiring to put the converter box where we would've liked it, very tight. All in all, it worked and can't wait to use my vehicle for camping this weekend! 241141

This is a good wiring kit. However as others have pointed out, there is one wire that is too short and it's impossible to install it where/how the instructions recommend. It's also pretty tricky to run the power wire through the heat shield all the way to the battery. Honestly, if I had it to do over, I'd rather pay a shop to do this part. The hitch was a breeze to install, but I spent way more time and frustration on the wiring kit than I expected. 496911

As others have said the the drivers side wiring is short so it's better to get the wiring up to the left hand lens before mounting the control box. Rather than mickey mouse the wire to the battery connect it to the factory location in the rear fuse panel of your 2013-2016 Escape using the supplied fuse holder and a quick disconnect crimp connector. Other than those two issues the kit worked great. 462689

I had a curt system which stopped working correctly, as the running lights stopped. This kit was easy to install (except for one user error). To install, I clipped all the zip ties holding my previous kit main wire, then removed it from the battery. I taped the new power wire to the old and pulled it through. Super easy. Zip ties and secured it in place. Next, removed the old system and began installing the new. My error was that I ran the new wires too far to the left of the left rear light. I missed the fact that I should have ran them a few inches to the right to allow for easy passage up through the body and light area. This was clear in the video on the rear right install, but I missed it. Was able to get the right side installed super easy. Connected the fuse wire to battery, installed fuse, and bam, good as new. I had a shop so my first and offered little to no help on fixing it. Easier to replace system which I did. ETRAILER.COM has the best parts. 376499

Last summer, I bought a hitch and lighting harness for my 2015 Escape from etrailer. They were shipped quickly and fit perfectly! Unfortunately, the Escape met with dire circumstances recently and was totalled. I was devastated, but the insurance company came through and I was able to upgrade to a 2016 Escape. I have a little trailer I use to haul mulch and home materials and I wanted a hitch. Right away, I thought of my last experience and Tuesday late afternoon I ordered a new hitch and lighting via internet. The shipping would have been free, but I upped to get it sooner, so I paid a reasonable and discounted $.$$ to receive it in three days. I got it in less than 48 hours from the time I ordered!!!! Once again, it fit perfectly and practically jumped onto the vehicle by itself! LOL Doing my happy dance and I'm 70 years old! THANKS eTRAILER!!!! Has there been any problems with wiring related to turn signals faulting out when hooked to the trailer or not?

-- comment by: LARRY M - 02/27/2015

We haven't had any issues with the harness we've installed here in house. If the faults are happening only when a trailer is connected, there may be a short on the trailer light wiring and it may be a good idea to check connections on the trailer lights and inspect the wiring for knicks, breaks or frays.

The wiring harness works great and is very reliable. Instead of routing the harness connector directly to the trailer, I connect it to a 1 foot Hopkins 4 wire flat extension (48145) and tuck the harness up and under the car. This keeps the harness connector protected from the weather. I'll then connect the extension to the trailer and only have to replace it when the end eventually corrodes. This harness is very well designed and the kit comes complete and ready to install. There's plenty of slack wire for any configuration as well. I will definitely buy again. 675391

If youre losing multiple taillight converter harnesses, typical cause is a short circuit somewhere in the trailer wiring itself. Trace each circuit rearward from the trailer connector back to its lamp. Look for loose connections or pinched wires or cracked and worn wire insulation. Anything that would allow the bare copper inside the wiring to short out to the trailer frame. Once the short is located and repaired, you should stop continually needing to replace the taillight wiring harnesses. Ill link you some wiring help articles that you might find helpful.

Nice product I installed it on my 2016 Escape. It took about 4 hours. 2 1/2 of which were trying to fish the first back light connector. I ended up going to the store and buying a multi-pack of heat shrink spicers and cutting the brown and yellow wires and then fishing them through took about 5 minutes then. I felt like I was going to snap or break the plastic around my light trying to get the connector through before that. (I can see why that part is cut out of the install video). Other that that the rest when very well. Trailer lights work perfectly. When I tested the first turn signal it took a couple seconds before it worked and started making the ticking sound. I guess the unit had to connect with the car. After that every thing was as it should be. Dealer wanted close to $800 for the trailer install. Thanks for saving me a bundle! 654917

Installed the 118566 T-One vehicle wire harness into my sons 2013 Ford yesterday and overall the install went pretty well. The harness itself fit within the vehicle well, however the process of threading the wire bundles up to the taillight clusters and stringing the battery + wire along the bottom of the vehicle is rather tedious. The installation instructions and video were well done and much appreciated and the harness worked as intended without issue. One improvement that could be made would be to provide a split, or fork, type terminal for the battery post rather than a ring-type terminal as the post nut isn't intended for complete removal. I ended up using my own fork-type terminal. I would also recommend including wire splices and terminals which have are weather-proof (i.e. covered in heat-shrink) rather than the general-purpose ones included with the kit. 580004

This was a fairly straight forward install. It arrived 5 days after ordering it. Packaging was pretty banged up, but nothing was damaged or lost. Fortunately I already had these on hand. Great product. 549813

But the locations where the hitch hangs the lowest are also further forward on the vehicle so the vehicle would have to be transitioning from level ground to a very steep incline for the hitch to make contact with the ground. Since ground...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch And Wiring For 2013 Ford Escape SEL 2.0
  • The photos did not seem to make it so I will make some recommendations that will work for your 2013 Escape. The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2013 Escape is the Draw-Tite Max Frame # 75758. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2-inch receiver opening. Since it sounds like you plan on doing some towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop....

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Ford Escape SE with Best Towing Capacity
  • For your 2015 Ford Escape the best trailer hitch we have for you needs is the Draw Tite part # 75758 which is a Class III, 2 inch opening trailer hitch with capacities of 4,500 lb total trailer weight and 675 lbs tongue weight. I attached an install video for this hitch on a similar 2015 Ford Escape as yours for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring you'd then want the part # 118566 which is a confirmed fit. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer...

  • Parts Needed for Towing with a 2017 Ford Escape
  • The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13186 is a confirmed fit for your 2017 Ford Escape but for the wiring harness you want the T-One part # 118715 instead of part # 118566 which fits a 2013-2016 Ford Escape. If you will be using this to tow then you also need a ball mount and hitch ball. One of the more popular options that we have is the Curt Class III Ball Mount with 2" Ball # C45036. You need to check the linked helpful article on ball mounts though to make sure that this one, which...

  • Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2013 Ford Escape without Factory Tow Package
  • For your 2013 Ford Escape without factory tow package the least costly trailer wiring harness is # HM11140514. But if it were me I would spend a few more cents and go with the Tekonsha harness # 118566 because we hear about fewer issues with the Tekonsha brand. I have linked videos showing example installations of both harnesses for you.

  • Recommended Ball Mount Kit for 2016 Ford Escape Towing Utility Trailers
  • The size of utility trailer you're likely to pull with your 2016 Ford Escape will have either a 1-7/8-inch or 2-inch ball coupler so one of these two sizes is likely to be what you need. The trailer's coupler will usually have the correct ball size (or sizes, in the case of an adjustable coupler) stamped into the metal housing. The best way to go for flexibility is our 2-inch hitch Ball Mount Kit # 989900 which includes two ball mounts with different amounts of rise and drop, as well...

For a wiring kit to install the brake controller to the 7-way you would want the Wiring Kit for 2 and 4 Brake Electric Brake Controllers # 5506. This will provide the power source and ground for the wiring for the brake controller. You will need to test the wires from the brake pedal switch of your vehicle to find a circuit that has voltage when the brakes...

So it will still work it just has a more limited range with the hitch installed. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. • Can a Non-Powered Trailer Wiring Harness be Used on a 2014 Ford Escape

The reason that some vehicles require (or it is recommended) a powered trailer wiring harness is because modern vehicle wiring has become so then that it often times cannot handle the additional power draw from trailer lights.
