Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

With the exception of the carton looked like it went to Afghanistan and back carton was dented torn and ripped however all parts were still inside

Trailer wiring it's a done in less than two hours without lifting the car. ( I have a couple phone calls on the time ) I'm so happy with video on YouTube and make me so easy to install the wiring.
I did not install the hitch yet but I think that's going to be more easier.
Thank you for a good product and fast shipping

by:

Easy to install. Kit was complete. I drilled through my frame and hid the wire under my car.

2013 Toyota Venza

I purchased this trailer hitch and wiring harness with carrier basket with shipping in 10 days, had it in 3. Ordered the wrong wiring harness, called etrailer and they directed me to the right harness with an easy exchange. Installed hitch with help from my son, an easy installation. Installed tail/brake lights, basket folds up out of the way when not in use and I still have access to the SUV rear lift door. Like the way the 2" mount tube is bent to give you more ground clearance for basket.

The hitch has worked out well and the wiring harness was not to hard to install. I like the way the wiring harness stored in the cargo area and the hitch fits close up under the body.

Yup, a year later I am still pleased

Excellent purchase experience. Website is great. The installation videos were excellent and accurate. I did the hitch installation alone with the car on jackstands. Took about an hour. Everything fit perfectly. Great not to have to adjust anything. The wiring kit took about two hours to complete. About an hour to get everything in the back and about an hour to install the wire to the battery. Was able to put the car on a lift for the battery wire. That would not have easy on stands. Haven't towed with it yet, but expect that everything will work as it should.

I am pleased with the hitch and wiring harness. I recently used them to tow a U-haul trailer loaded with a motorcycle from Colorado to Arkansas. Both products worked flawlessly.

2011 Toyota Venza

I used the etrailer online video to walk me through the installation of the above wiring harness on my 2011 Venza. The whole process was relatively staightforward since the video was specific to my vehicle and the instructor explained everything in minute detail. The local Toyota dealership wanted $150 to do this install, and I was able to zip tie the power wire under the chassis to reach the battery terminal without lifting the car. Mission accompished!

I like the fact that the trailer connection is stored inside the car by the spare tire. I see other connectors dangling loose outside of the car a lot.

Delivery was quick even with it being just before Christmas, I had expected it to arrive after the Christmas break. I'll get to do the installation over the next couple of days, thanks for the speedy response. I had an old unit off my Lexus but found it had six pin connections at the splitter points near the lights so had to revert to ordering this four pin version. The old one was an easy install so I'm sure this one will go the same way, the Curt product are very good quality and fit as per their on line videos.

Asked a neighbor for help and had the new hitch installed in less than 5 minutes. Too easy, outstanding fit, great look and fits my needs.

Wiring harness took about 1 hour and spent most of the time finding the right holes to fish the wiring harness through.

A good buy for a fair price.

Looks easy to install, sure hope it is.

by:

It worked. (I've only used it once.)

It
was easy to install and (if I remember correctly since it was a year ago) the directions were clear and I had no issues.

I had a trailer hitch for a platform attachment but no electrical connection. My daughter needed a few pieces of furniture picked up at various locations. I needed to rent a trailer and needed the light hook up so that is why I bought it.

2013 Toyota Venza

I found myself in a place where the need for a pick-up or a trailer was in order, since i really like my 2013 Toyota venza i chose the later, after shopping on line i thought this looked to meet my needs i have the ability to tow 3500lbs with 500lb tongue weight, so the package showed up in 2 days and i was able to do the install in about 40 minutes , it was as easy as they said it would be, i did need help from my son with balancing the thing, but everything lined up perfectly, the electrical was another story, since you need to basically disassemble the entire rear interior of the vehicle to connect the wiring harness,(ford looks super simple)but the connections worked perfectly and the straps provided were plenty, and the whole thing after it was done looks high and tight, i like it.

The hitch is working great, the wiring is also working out very well.

by:

Wanted to be safe driving on I-95 so with bike on carrier the brake-turn signal lights were partially blocked. Fishing the wire from the trunk to the battery was a little tough on a creeper but it worked out. Everyone says how visible the lights are, so we feel safer.

2012 Chevrolet Volt

Install of both trailer hitch and wiring harness went very smoothly. Total install time for both items to me 1 hour 47 minutes and that included watching etrailer’s online video. The most time consuming part of the install was routing the 12 volt power wire from the spare tire compartment to the battery. Everything was well designed for a do it yourself person at home.

by:
2011 Toyota Camry

Easy installation of the hitch. Took less then 30 minutes to install it. The wiring took a little longer close to an hour since I had to connect one wire to the battery. That required running a wire from the trunk to under the hood. Excellent product's. After installing the hitch I took the trailer on an hour drive 50 miles away and purchased 4 garage doors. Hauling them home with ease. The 2011 Camry 4 cylinder had no issues. Thanks again Trailer for your products and support.

My husband installed this for me. I know that the wire running to the battery is a pain, but I didn’t get any bad feedback from him. He is a gear head though so he knew what to do. I also know he watched the video first, so I recommend that as well. Very satisfied, especially since it would have cost me about $185 if I took it somewhere

Online instruction video very helpful. Hardest part for me was separating the existing taillight connectors. It takes strong fingers from an awkward position. Everything fit perfectly and works well. Very happy with this kit.

  • Recommended Hitch and Wiring Harness for 2015 Toyota Venza
For your 2015 Toyota Venza the hitch I recommend for you is the Curt # 13356, which is a very popular hitch for your vehicle and our customers who use it have given it a nearly unanimous 5-star review. This is a 2" hitch with a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs and a tongue weight of 350 lbs so you will have no problems using any type of bike rack. I've added a photo of a customer who is using it with a 4-bike Thule rack so you can see how your set up might work. The wiring harness you'll want...

Thank you very much! I'll pass that along to our video and install crew. The best way to make that wiring run from the rear of the vehicle up to the battery would be to locate and follow an existing wiring harness under the vehicle, and zip tie the taillight converter power wire to that every couple of feet. You'll want to be sure to avoid anything moving or hot like suspension or exhaust components. If you drive on gravel roads quite a bit, you might also consider a length of wire loom...

  • Is a Battery Connection Required when Installing a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2012 Toyota Venza
The Curt trailer wiring harness # C56079 does require a direct connection to the vehicle battery. This is what will power the trailer lights. It is designed this way to protect the sensitive wiring on the vehicle from any shorts that could end up damaging the vehicle wiring and/or electrical components. The connection has to be made at the battery and not any other location because the harnesses have not been tested for use from an alternate power source. While there is power that runs...

  • Is an Aftermarket Trailer Hitch and Wiring Harness Different than an OEM Trailer Hitch and Harness
You will often pay inflated prices at car dealers. There is really no difference between the trailer hitch and wiring harness that Toyota offers for your 2009 Toyota Venza than the Curt Trailer Hitch, # 13356, and the Curt Trailer Wiring Harness, # C56079. All trailer hitches must pass specific tests whether they are OEM or aftermarket. In fact, Curt is in the OEM market as well as the aftermarket. • No Trailer Lights After Installing Curt Wiring Harness on 2011 Toyota Venza
I'm guessing where you grounded the Curt # C56079 isn't sufficient. It could be grounded well enough to light up your test light, especially if it's an LED tester, but not enough for the actual trailer lights. I'd start by moving the ground location to something more secure than the exhaust like the vehicle frame. Making sure the location is clean and bare metal as well.
