This is designed to go over the enclosure like you asked about and will keep the contents of the carrier protected and dry.   I recommend going with a cargo carrier with a 2 inch shank because it will be the best fit with the least amount of movement between the carrier shank and the hitch receiver. So between the 2 you are looking at that would be # 6502. You could go with Curt carrier # C18152 which costs less than the Pro Series carrier, fits 2 inch hitches only, and is a little bit larger at 24 x 60 inches.

  Hey Hugo, so the cargo carrier part # C18152 is the base of the # C63ZJ which is the carrier plus the enclosure but oddly enough we don't sell the enclosure by itself. We used to and it was part # e52PR but we now only have it available in the complete kit. So the short version of the answer is no there isn't a way to do what you are looking for so best option would be the entire kit part # C63ZJ.

  Hello Richard, thanks for getting in touch. Sadly, we do not offer any kind of heat shield that can be used with a cargo carrier. This is a fairly common issue especially on vehicles where the exhaust sticks straight back. The only real solution I can offer is to use a cargo basket with a bit of rise built into the shank, such as the 24x60 Curt Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # C18152 which has 2-1/2" of rise. This can help the basket clear the exhaust and protect your cargo.
