Question:
Hi - I’m looking for a swing away cargo hauler for the back of a ford ranger that we flat tow behind our 40’ motorhome. Would this work? I plan to put my sons racing wheelchair on it which weighs about 50 lbs. if I can use it and put 2 of the flat trays on it, he also has a trail wheelchair that would be super helpful to fit on top layer. It weighs about 70 lbs. thanks!!

Hey Kim. While the Yakima EXO Swing Away Cargo Carrier item # Y72VR or item # Y84ZR sound like they would match your needs perfectly, these systems are not designed to be used behind a flat towed vehicle. According to Yakima it is due to the added weight at the rear of your flat tow. This can cause sway and put additional stress on the swing away bracket on the carrier.
You would need to use a cargo carrier that does not have the swing away function on the back of your Ranger. I recommend the Curt 60x24 Hitch Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches item # C18152. This carrier has a 500 lbs and measures 60" long x 24" wide x 5-1/2" deep on the inside of the rails.
Does your Ranger have a 2" hitch?

Thank you!! That is the exact one we are using now! Is there a way to use this directly on the back of our motorhome and still flat tow the truck? The problem I’m trying to fix is that our son’s wheelchair is inside the truck and it’s very difficult to get out with the cargo hauler on the truck. We have a Roadmaster dual hitch adaptor for our blue ox towbar that has two openings - one opening is at a 6” drop (our Ranger needs this) and the other opening is at a 2” rise. I was hoping to use it for the cargo hauler in the top one but I’m worried about the car hitting the cargo hauler when we turn. Thanks very much for your help!! I do not know what I’m doing and I really appreciate it!
