Installation of Curt Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Curt electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. When this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

This adapter plugs into the connector behind your vehicle's dashboard. To reach the connector, first locate the notch in the access panel in the center of the dash, near the driver's side. Using a trim panel puller, carefully pry the panel out and undo the locking tabs to remove the panel. You will find the mating connector behind this portion of your dashboard.

No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the 2 factory ports, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

I purchased an adapter to go between my brake controller and the factory wiring in my 2015 Tundra (C51455), I have not installed it yet. I will review it when it is installed.

The wiring adapter I purchased worked perfect and the install was simple, thanks

Toyota Tacoma

I bought this connector for my new Toyota Tacoma after moving the Brake Controller from my traded in Jeep. I had hardwired the Jeep, but this was a direct connector and was much, much easier to install. The Curt brake controller and this cable make an excellent combination to control the brakes on my Casita. The only flaw is that Toyota hides the factory end under the upper left side floor-well cover and was hard to find. Not etrailer's fault. Also, I have bought several items from etrailer and the customer service is always superb, as are all of the item descriptions and videos on the products they carry. Great place to get what you need for your vehicle.

The hardest part of the job was finding the pre-installed connector on the Tacoma. It is tucked in behind a wire bundle so you have to know where to look. Once found, simple plug and play.

2017 Toyota Tacoma

I picked this Curt brake controller As it is specifically wired for my 2017 Toyota Tacoma which already has the tow package. When I finally found where to hook it up in my truck I realized I needed C51455 part which is the female end .. they gave me another 15 inches of extra wiring so I can mount the controller by my right leg as I drove.. and the great thing about this experience I called on a Sunday afternoon got a hold of A person ( Shawn B) Who was very helpful and knew exactly which part I needed .
I highly recommend using e trailer

by:

As alway, etrailer had exactly what I needed to do the job simply, effectively, and as the best price. What more can you ask for?

I like this controller mainly for its sleek design and it blends into the dash of my Tacoma. It works right out of the box and I’ve rarely had to adjust the setting manually. It sometimes lights up weird when not in use but works fine. I’d purchase again.

by:
2017 Toyota Tundra

I grabbed this cable to connect my Curt Spectrum brake controller to my 2017 Toyota Tundra tow package cable. Worked great. The Tundra cable was located immediately behind the panel to the right of the steering wheel with the auto LSD button and Tow/Haul button (if equipped). My truck had a blank instead of tow/haul button.

by:
2017 Toyota Tacoma

VERY easy install. As mentioned in other reviews the hardest part is finding the factory plug in for a 2017 Tacoma. Toyota tucked it way in the back behind a wire bundle. Picture attached for reference.

by:

Ordered my brake controller for my tundra and it worked great. I had already been to a local store that kept providing me the wrong part so I took the time to research and this was exactly what I needed.

by:

arrived before I expected. Finding the prewired brake plug on my 2015 tundra was a pain. This wiring adapter made it possible to complete the job.

by:

Was very easy to install with the vehicle specific wiring harness, took it for a short test drive with my 19 ft Scamp Camper and it works as it should

by:

I like the installation photos provided in the Q&A section. Fast shipping.

Same review as the controller. Just plug and go. EXTREMELY easy. I had my 7 year old daughter with me and she could have basically hooked it up. She is as anxious to go camping as I am!

  • Will Curt Echo Under-Dash Bluetooth Brake Controller Fit on a 2018 Toyota Tundra?
Hey Brian, thanks for reaching out! The Curt Echo Under-Dash Bluetooth Brake Controller # C27JR is a plug and play installation via the Wiring Adapter # C51455. The "play" part kind of depends on what your 2018 Toyota Tundra is equipped with. If you have the factory 7-Way then you're good to go. If you have the factory 4-Way then you need the Hopkins # 37185, and if you don't have any factory wiring at the back of your truck you need the Wiring # ETBC7 kit. Let me know if you have any...

  • Comparing the Curt Spectrum Brake Controller to Redarc Tow-Pro Elite
By all accounts the Curt Spectrum Trailer Brake Controller # C51170 works well and is easy to use and install on most vehicles. It is a brand new item so not a lot of feedback has come in on it. I did learn a few things though after speaking with our install team about this controller. First, compared to the Redarc controller # RED44FR, the Curt Spectrum is easier to install. It can be surface mounted meaning that drilling is not necessarily required (depends on how you run the wiring)....

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for 2018 Toyota Tundra to Replace OEM Controller
Hey Jared, so the P3 part # 90195 is a great option for a brake controller for your 2018 Toyota Tundra but oddly enough Tekonsha doesn't have an install harness so you'd have to use the Curt # C51455 and wire it directly to the universal harness that comes with the P3 and then plug that in under your dash.

  • No Trailer Brake Controller Plug Under Dash On 2018 Toyota Tundra
The 2018 Toyota Tundra was a bit of an oddity as there are several reported instances of models not coming equipped with the factory trailer brake controller plug under the dash for use with an aftermarket brake controller as the years before did. There are also some 2018 models that do indeed have this and it seems to be hit or miss. I don't have an answer to why that is but I do have a solution for you to install any aftermarket trailer brake controller like the Curt TriFlex Trailer Brake...

  • Replacing Factory Brake Controller on 2018 Toyota Tundra
The problems you are having with the factory brake controller on your 2018 Toyota Tundra, as you mentioned, are not too uncommon. This is really the case with most factory brake controllers regardless of the truck make or model, as many customers choose to replace it with an aftermarket unit as soon as they get a chance. Before doing so I do recommend talking with a local Toyota dealer to see if anything needs to be done after unplugging the factory unit as it's possible the computer...

  • Where Is The Trailer Brake Connector Plug On 2021 TRD Off Road Tacoma?
Sometimes it's hard to find the wiring as they are sometimes taped up and out of the way. I've included a picture of the instructions to help you find the right spot. The connector should be on the back side of the vehicle harness. That's probably why you aren't seeing it. I've found that they are pretty neatly tucked behind the wires so it takes some looking to find it. When you do find it, you can use this adapter # C51455 for your brake controller.

Both the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR and the Curt Spectrum # C51170 Trailer Brake Controller offer a sleek OEM design that gets away from the traditional knee knocker mounted options that take up a lot of space in the cab. One of the main benefits of both controllers is the subtle design that tries to blend in with the interior of...

  • Difference Between Proportional Brake Controller and Time-Delayed Controller on 2018 Toyota Tundra
The difference between a proportional brake controller and a time-delayed brake controller is that a proportional controller is pretty simple. A time-delayed controller like the Curt Discovery # C84VV will apply your trailer brakes each time you press the brake pedal in your 2018 Toyota Tundra; it is called time-delayed because there is a slight delay from the time you press your Tundra's brakes to the time the controller reaches max power output.
