Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the Brake Adjustment Spoon for Drum Brakes

Today, we're going to take a look at the Performance Tools universal offset brake adjustment spoon. This tool is for adjusting drum brakes, has the angles blades, one on each end for confined areas. This will adjust the star adjuster and the screw adjuster type brakes very quickly and easily. It's made of a drop forged steel and has a chrome plating to it to help resist corrosion. I just want to try to show you what it's used for. Here's a typical drum brake that has the star adjuster right at the bottom, so on the very back you will access to adjust that through the access hole right here. This tool is made to be able to go through that access hole and reach that adjustment gear and adjust your brakes.

Depending on how much clearance you have, you might have to use the 90 degree angle. It's part of this smaller angle one. That should do it for the review on the Performance Tools universal offset brake adjustment spoon.

Thanks for the follow up Russ, depending on which parts fell apart we do have some replacement items available for example the replacement shoe lining kit is available as part # AKBRKR-S-10, the replacement magnet is available as part # AKBRKR-M10, and we have 2 replacement spring options, part # AKBRKR-SP, and part # AKBRKR-AS-1012

My brakes were not working right on my trailer. So I bought new trailer brake kits from etrailer. The kits came fast and I installed them The only think I did not like is the wires from the magnets on the brakes are very thin wire. I wish they would have used thicker wire with a heavier coating.

by:

I was extremely surprised with the positive response with their customer service, error on my part ordering the wrong part. Extremely quick delivery exchange (2days) living on the Canadian West Coast.
The brakes are doing their job great, easy installation using etrailer tutorial videos. Great company will use again.

by:

I was initially concerned about finding the right parts as the trailer was fairly old. etrailer had just what I needed. The website is so elegant. I was able to find the right parts quickly and with comparative options to make a final selection. The how-to videos are great. This made installation a little more comfortable. Especially when you do not perform this type of work every day. The parts were of high quality and are working as expected. I highly recommend etrailer for any of your trailer needs.

by:

This is a MUST for adjusting trailer drum brakes. Makes it so much easier to reach in and set the brakes. Don't even have to remove the wheel to do it! The drums I have are Item #AKEBRK-6

by:

I have two trailers on which I adjust the brakes about once a year, and I find it worthwhile to spend a little bit on this tool. It works better than a screwdriver, but crusty brakes will fight you when adjusting through the backing plate regardless of the tool you use.

by:

The only reason I do not give you 5 stars is because your web site. When internet ordering, it should instantly state when a part is out of stock. Even nicer would be expected restocking dates. The parts received were exactly what I ordered for my electric brake conversion from surge brakes at far less expense than reparing the internally rusted surge brake system. There was a plethora of information on your web site to assist me in ordering the correct parts for the conversion. Plus there were videos to see how to complete the conversion and how parts were installed and adjusted. Customer service was excellent.

by:

Brake assemblies were just the ticket to getting my cargo trailer brakes back to new working order. Shipping was great and fast. I needed them quick, as my old brakes had worn out and broke up. This caused damage to the internal works. A super way to replace you brakes and worn out pieces. I would urge anyone with internal brake problems to give these a try!!

by:

So Disappointed!! This is a review of my order experience, not the product. I needed to replace the brake assemblies on my camper before we could go on vacation. I call to see how long it would take to receive and was told 2 days. I placed the order and received as told. I was about to be impressed until I opened the box. They not only sent the wrong brand, but also the wrong size. I called customer service and had to wait 45 minutes for someone answer. She agreed it was their mistake. I told her I only had two more days to get them on and still go on vacation. I asked for next day delivery. She was able to do that, but said it would ship that day and go 2nd day. The next day, the order had not shipped and the tracking number I was given doesn't even register on UPS. I don't when or if I will receive the correct product. Very disappointed that they would not step up and make it right.

by:

I'm overhauling a 20 year old boat trailer and etrailer.com was the ONE and ONLY site on the internet that had both the necessary parts for this old trailer, but also instructional videos and hints on what to order and how to complete the job with a minimum amount of mistakes. This particular order (2 hyd. brake assemblies, hardware and brake tool) qualified for free shipping, but I didn't expect the above average delivery time also (2 days). I'm not finished with this project, but am sure I'll be doing more business with etrailer. Thanks for the great website and exceptional service.

by:

Nice tool to have but not worth getting if you get the never adjust brakes. The design stops you from using this.

Needless to say it’s a tool a still keep in the trailer just in case

by:

The brake assemblies I received seem to be just fine. They were a good fit on my trailer. Haven't completed the job yet to try the brakes out, but they look great. All my other parts were correct and very well packaged. I really appreciate the great customer service. These guys seem to really care.

by:

Great service. Quick shipment on brake assemblies and tires. Competitive pricing. Found myself a new supplier.

by:

If you don't have one of these and have drum trailer brakes you need this.

by:

Brake back plates, shoes, seals, etc. were exact fit and very rapid change out in just a few minutes. Connections for brake magnets and of course cleaning took the most time. Adjusted brakes to Dexter instructions and worked perfect.

by:

Everything arrived but I was surprised that small parts weren't lost because one cardboard box (brake drum) had split open and the inner bag (lug nuts, etc) was ripped.. I would encourage the packers to make sure packages are sturdy enough for the trip.

by:

An economy brake spoon. Since I only needed it for the initial adjustment of my self-adjusting brakes, I'll probably never use it again; however, it was easy to use and did the job I bought it for without any problems. The only reason it is not rated a five is that for professional, daily use, (admittedly, not advertised as professional) it could have been made of a higher grade steel. It suited my needs completely.

by:

Sure beats using a large flat blade screwdriver. Should have bought one of these years ago

Worth the price! The brakes are difficult enough to set and adjust, this tool works good.

by:

Brake drum assy, grease and adjuster tool were all excelent. Everything fit perfectly.
Very satisfied with the service. Also shippment came quickly. When parts are needed in the future I will definitly buy from etrailer.com again.

by:

I have ordered multiple times from etrailer. Always fast shipping. Will continue to order parts and accessories as needed.

by:

Great tool. Works as promised and much better than trying to use screwdriver that doesn’t fit properly. Perfect brake adjusting tool.

by:

A must have for drum brakes! Get one!

by:

I’m very happy with everything I purchased from etrailer. Everything was correct and fit perfectly. I’m very impressed with the service and their professionalism and knowledge of what they sell. I will definitely be ordering from them again.

  • Initial Adjustment Of Self-Adjusting Electric Brakes On Trailer
To initially adjust the brakes, you will need to raise the trailer and secure it on adequate capacity jack stands. Check that the wheel and drum rotate freely. Do not lift or support trailer on any part of the axle or the suspension system. Remove the adjusting hole cover from the adjusting slot on the bottom of the brake backing plate. With a screwdriver or standard adjusting tool like part # W80630, rotate the starwheel of the adjuster assembly to expand the brake shoes. Adjust the brake...

  • How to Adjust Self-Adjusting Trailer Brakes
I have included a link to a video on adjusting self-adjusting brakes. Basically there is a device on the adjustment wheel on these brakes that prevents the shoes from adjusting back inward. You have to sort of move that out of the way to be able to turn the adjustment star wheel easier. The video shows the process. I also recommend adjustment spoon # W80630 to make things easier.

  • How to Find Replacement Drum Brake Assembly for Boat Trailer
I can tell you exactly how to find compatible drum brake assemblies, though I took a look and could not find any type of reference to Dico 40511. To determine the brake assemblies that will fit your 2002 Escort boat trailer, you need to know your axle's weight capacity, your mounting flange bolt pattern and the inside diameter and depth of your drum. For example, Hydraulic Brake Kit # AKFBBRK-35-D are rated for 3,500 lb axles, have a 4-bolt mounting flange pattern and measure 10" diameter...

  • How to Loosen Self-Adjusting Brakes
It is possible to loosen up how tight your Self-Adjusting Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA but it is a little difficult to do, mainly due to lack or room for working. You can potentially remove your hub to make loosening the brake a bit easier but I recommend trying to adjust them from the access holes first. With the plugs removed, use your brake adjustment spoon # W80630 or a flat screwdriver to press down on the silver tab (yellow arrow) that keeps the wheel (green arrow) in...

  • Why Would Trailer Brakes Get Warmer on One Side When Brake Controller is Used
You might have one brake that's adjusted tighter than the other. That's really the only thing I can think of that would cause one hub to get hotter than the others when brakes are applied. You want your brake controller to be set so that it will stop the trailer safely. The temperature of the wheels does not normally factor into the adjustments. You want the brakes to almost lock up if you slide the manual override lever. To see how to manually adjust trailer brake assemblies check out...

Thanks for that great information we have exactly what you need for your 2,000 lb axles. The number you gave of 1.063 inches in diameter where your bearings ride on the spindle corresponds to Bearing # L44649. Knowing that, we can get you the correct hub and drum, which is the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2K Axles # AKHD-545-2-2K. Nine times out of ten the issue can be resolved by adjusting the brakes on the trailer. Since the vehicle already has a factory 4-flat, you would just need to add the 7-way and wiring along with the controller. • Initial Adjustment Of Nev-R-Adjust Electric Brakes
When you install Nev-R-Adjust drum brakes like Dexter part # 23-458 and part # 23-459 the initial setup will be different. The humming sound you hear from your trailer's electric drum brakes is a good sign. So long as a hub uses the correct bearings that match the dimensions of the spindle that is on the axle there is no worry about using two different brands of products, such as a Dexter hub on a Lippert axle.
