Friction-style sway control system uses a telescoping bar with friction pads to fight trailer sway. Adjustable tension lets you set the right amount of resistance for your setup. Attaches to your trailer and weight distribution system or ball mount.

Features:

  • Friction-style sway control effectively fights trailer sway after it begins
    • Reduces side-to-side movement caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers
  • Bar unit houses the sway control mechanism
    • Interior arm telescopes in and out as your trailer moves
    • Friction pads rub against each other to create resistance
  • Adjustable tension lets you set the perfect amount of control and resistance
    • Tension-adjustment screw easily turns in 1/4" increments to fine-tune tension
    • Built-in lever lets you disengage the system to completely release tension
  • Trailer-mounted ball lets you connect the bar unit to your trailer frame
    • May be mounted to either side of your trailer
    • Bolt-on installation with included self-tapping screws
  • 1-1/4" Hitch ball mounts on weight distribution system head to provide attachment point for sway control unit
    • Included adapter bracket can be welded to system head if there is no ball mount platform
  • Easy to remove - simply unclip the bar unit from each attachment ball using the included safety clips
  • 1-Year limited warranty

Note: Not for use on trailers with surge brakes. It is recommended that you remove this sway control unit before backing up/reversing and before towing in slippery conditions such as on wet, icy, gravel, or snow-covered roads.

When installing this sway control system, follow the included instructions and measure 24" straight back from the center of the coupler along the frame of the trailer to determine the location of the spacer plate and trailer-mounted attachment ball. To achieve proper alignment, the spacer plate may not be necessary in every application.

Curt Sway Control on Trailer Frame

One friction-style sway control can be used for trailers with up to 6,000-lb GTW. If your trailer's GTW is between 6,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs, you will need 2 sway-control units, 1 on either side of the trailer. You will also want to use 2 units if your trailer is 26' or longer.

Video Transcript for Curt Weight Distribution - Sway Control Only - 17200 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number 17200. This is the Curt Friction Style Sway Control System. Friction style sway control systems are going to bolt onto the trailer frame at one end and hook up to a small hitch ball that mounts to the system head at the other end, which is going to be this little ball right here. By attaching to both the weight distribution system and the trailer frame, the sway control unit can supply proper tension to help keep the trailer in line. It's going to feature an interior bar that telescopes in and out as your trailer moves, so as soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads on the inside of the unit make contact with one another, and they're going to create resistance, and that's designed to help reduce any further side to side movement. This system is going to include the sway control unit, the trailer mounted attachment ball. The distance that we have from the center of one hole to the center of the other is going to measure 2-5/16". It is a square design, so that's going to be the same measurement all the way around. It's also going to feature the hitch mounted attachment ball, which is going to be this right here, part number C40093. That is included.

The shank length of the hitch ball, measuring from the base of the platform to the bottom of the shank, or the bolt post, is going to measure 1-7/8". It's going to feature a weld-on tab for left hand use, or for use without weight distribution systems in place, so if you want to attach this to a standard ball mount, that's what this is for right here. You're going to get the hardware, so you're going to get two clips, and you're going to get 8 self tapping screws, as well as a spacer plate. This is going to measure 6" by 3", and it's going to feature the same pattern for that right there, so those holes line up with one another. The spacer plate is completely optional, when it comes to installing it. Basically there's no rhyme or reason when or when not to use it. The only reason why it's included is that way you can achieve proper alignment. So keep that in mind.

You do not have to install that, but if everything does not align correctly, then if you have it installed, you may need to remove it, or if everything is not lining up correctly and you dont have it installed, then you may need to install it to achieve proper alignment. You can use this system on the left or right side of your trailer. All you need to do is pull the inside arm out, flip it over, and then re-insert it. Then you'll need to switch this portion right here. So basically, you just switch the handle with the bolt at the bottom, and it's just going to reverse everything. That way, you can use this on the opposite side of the trailer. The handle that I have in my hand, this is going to be the on/off switch for the unit, and then the bolt under the handle is going to be the tension adjustment.

Please keep in mind that for trailers that exceed 26' in length, you'll want to use two friction sway controls, or a dual cam sway control system. It's a very simple system to operate and to use. This portion right here is going to be screwed in to the trailer frame using some of the self tapping screws. It's going to connect to the socket back here, and then the arm is going to be held in place by inserting a clip through the holes. It'll just slide through like that. That's going to hold the arm on, and then the ball right here is either going to mount to the weight distribution head. If you're not using a weight distribution system, then you would weld this on to your standard ball mount if your ball mount doesn't already have this attached to it.

So you can weld that on. It's going to go through that hole, and then the socket is going to attach right over there, and you'll use the other clip to secure it, just like we did at the rear socket. That's going to do it for today's review of part number 17200. This is the Curt Friction Style Sway Control System. .

I purchased a Curt sway bar kit for my camper and have had great success with it. I have purchased items from etrailer in the past and always had great service. I will continue to order from them in the future and recommend to my friends and family. 641033

I never thought I needed a weight disturbing hitch cause I had a 3/4 ton truck. I never realized how unsafe it was before. Stress free driving now. 448978

The advantage Ive found purchasing from etrailer is that I can buy only the parts I need for multiple trailers that I own. My two primary trucks have the hitches and sway bars in them. By buying the other parts from etrailer all six of my trailers can be connected without effort of moving clamps at any time.

We are pulling a 3800 lbs travel trailer with a 2014 Acura MDX. The sway control has made a world of a difference. You can barely feel the crosswinds and a semi truck passing by causes only minor side motion. Highly recommend this product. 291978

Bought this to use while pulling my 27 foot camper with my Chevy Tahoe on the interstate. Made all the difference in the world and is the best money out side of weight distribution bars I have spent on the camper. I will add I did recently spend the money to upgrade to a dual cam type weight and sway control system, but had I not wanted to spend the big bucks, this little guy does all you need. Giving it to my dad this weekend for an upcoming camping trip to Verona Va... 418238

Bought this not realizing my trailers frame isnt large enough for the mounting bracket supplied. My frame is 3 on edge, while the bracket is the same. That would put the holes and self taping screws uncomfortably close to if not through the edge of the frame. Am going to try to fashion some clamping mechanism to hold the bracket on. Worst case, it slip and I dont have sway control, but thats the situation Im in now anyway. This is on a 3500 lb. 6x8 utility trailer.

Rather than trying to fabricate new mounts, the ball plate can be welded on. A certified welder can complete the task and you will have the ball solidly mounted without risking the trailer frame and losing the sway control bar. The only downside of course, is that it won' be easy to remove if you decide you don't want the ball on the frame any more.

Easy to install. I had to do a little welding, but nothing that I did not expect having read a lot about the product. It is definitely well made and I look forward to trying it out with weight on the trailer. I bought this a snowmobile trailer having had issues on the highway when a Tractor Trailer passes me. 585773

The sway control kit I ordered went on the receiver of my travel trailer easily and fits well. I tested the turn radius to see how sharp of a turn it would make without "hitting" and it performed perfectly. I haven't had the chance to take it on the road yet but don't anticipate any problems. 485830

Im so glad I ordered the sway control kit. Ive used it several times when pulling my travel trailer and it has made all the difference.

Curt Weight distribution hitch assembly including dual Curt 17200 sway control bars for our heavy 30 foot RV. Purchased through Etrailer Corp. the information from Etrailer was fantastic on which hitch assembly was best for my application, the hitch, bars, sway arms were delivered exactly on time with no scratches or damage. My light weight 2010 pick pulled well and was level and handled winds and passing semi trucks in the wind a pleasure! Unfortunately I don't have pictures to show because I have recently bought a new F-350 and a new 40' -5th wheel trailer and from Etrailer purchased a Demco 18K Hijacker Auto Slide 5th wheel Hitch that works fantastically. Thank you Etrailer for best prices and service! 373934

This was a great addition to my hitch I purchased 2 because of the length of my trailer and the weight that I tow.I have not had a single issue with towing in wind or letting off the accelerator to soon or going down hills. I highly recommend this is great addition to any hitch. 282089

Great product. Installation instructions were clear and easy to follow. Everything pictured was in the package. I paired mine with the Curt ball mount receiver w/sway control tab 2" hitch item ID D320. Products work perfectly together to stop the sway. I would highly recommend this system to anyone looking for sway control. 575807

installed but not tested on highway. Instruction manual (1 page) showed deceptive diagrams. 1 Install on right, but photos show on left and shows 2, both L & R. 2 Spacer plate is clear, but which holes to use for the sway control ball are mentioned. Either, it does not matter or it does. Say which is correct. 3 Sounds at first that my hitch should have a hole for the ball connection to car. But it does not, and most trailer hitches do not. I had the tab welded on. 4 Upon installing on the right side of trailer (as in right side of highway), the bar required flipping in order to put it over the ball. This possibility should be noted, so that I needn't worry if I had made a mistake. Support telephone staff were helpful. David 97352

Product arrived extremely fast! Easy to install. We are using this product as a second (drivers side unit) friction on our travel trailer, which means the adjuster had to be rotated, but it was SIMPLE to make that happen. I found answers to my questions about doing this in the Q&A section. The only thing I don't understand is the trailer ball side only has 4 bolt holes for this one, where as the one sent with the hitch kit we bought had 6 holes, otherwise its no different that I can tell. The camper towed pretty well with out any WDH or sway control the first time we pulled it home (which was 400 miles from the selling dealer), but we bought the extra for those really bad towing days (high cross winds) 268115

The product is excellent, the quality is also excellent. I like the heavy duty construction and high quality welding; the finish on the parts is also top notch. This product is a real good value. I plan on installing this on my travel trailer; it will eliminate any sway due to high speed. I have ordered several items from etrailer over the past few years; their prompt delivery and high quality product is why I continue to purchase from them. etrailer is on the top of my list when shopping for anything related to towing my boat or travel trailer. 583137

The anti sway bar works well and well worth buying and installing. There are 3 things I would say about it. 1. It has a 4 bolt mounting plate instead of 6. Disadvantage: poorer force distribution, Advantage: less drilled holes to weaken frame. 2.Could use better instructions on how to set it. It really is quite useless if you set it too loose. 3. Watch out for the front clip. Mine came off but the sway bar stayed attached (that's a good thing). I put a safety wire around the safety clip now. 481919

I will say that this company (etrailer.com) is like no other that I have ever done business with, lightning fast shipping, emails from employees about my order are you kidding me? Patrick, Joe and George all kept me updated from receiving the order to shipping to ETA and after it was delivered, I am very impressed and I have not even used the product yet, I did make the time this evening to install the sway bar and ball hitch both Curt products look very nice and well made, the paint I believe is powder coated so I don't have to worry about rusting out later on. Installation was easy, I will say I was a little worried about the 3"x 3" ball mount plate fitting my Jayco frame, the trailer is new 184 BH, it has a pretty narrow frame, the plate did go from edge to edge with no room to spare but the holes drilled out fine no problem with the fit it's just the bolt holes will be close to the edge of the frame, I used red loctite on the bolt threads to make certain they don't come loose. All I can say is great job guys, makes me proud to be from Wentzville Mo though I now live in KC Mo. Hope I can come up with something else to buy from you all. Thanks Mike PS I will post some pics later if I can get back to edit the review. 79679

Added this sway bar as a second one for my ToyHauler. With all the weight in the back of the trailer I needed a second. Since this brand was currently on my trailer and also on a second trailer I went with the tried and true. With the second sway bar I can pull my ToyHauler at 80 MPH next to tractor trailers and not get any after sway, it pulls straight. I highly recommend this sway bar, it only took me 30 minutes to install, most of that time was getting the measurements correct. 651940

Had a chance to check out my Curt anti sway device last week. It works better than expected and I am very impressed with the results. I only use it for interstate driving as big trucks at high speed does effect my 6' / 12' enclosed trailer. I still use caution around trucks but it makes the job much safer and easier. Thank you for the great service. Will be ordering more stuff soon... 630936

This sway control package is just what we needed! After towing our 3300 lb camper home with my wifes Jeep Cherokee, WITHOUT an anti-sway bar, I said I wasn't towing the camper anywhere until we had this installed. We drove in 20-30 mph crosswinds the entire 4+ hour drive back. With this installed, we hardly notice it. Now, you can't get rid of the wind itself, but you certainly don't have to worry about the trailer starting to move around on it's own - this is great for stabilizing everything. Easy to install - just used the template they include with it, and then just drilled some holes through the frame of the camper and installed the hitch, hooked up and we were ready to go. We only use Curt products for our vehicles, utility trailer, and camper - nothing compares in my opinion. 625418

It will be a couple of weeks before I use the hitch and bars. I will add more when I put them to use. I didn't realize how quickly I would receive the parts. Everything was great! I will definitely keep doing business with etrailer! 617472

  • Type of Ball Mount Suited for Welding on Sway Control Tab 3442
  • The B&W Tow & Stow 3-Ball Mount # BWTS20048B fits 2-1/2-inch hitches which are generally going to be towing trailers that are larger than what a simple friction sway control mechanism will handle. A friction sway ball mount tab # 3442 could be welded on but I would not do that to such a nice ball mount as the B&W. You will be better off selecting a fixed ball mount with the rise or drop you currently need and welding the tab onto that ball mount if you want to use a friction anti-sway...

  • Sway Control Kit and Bracket for 2006 Toyota Sienna
  • There is a sway control kit and bracket that will work for you but the combination you cited would not because your # C13105 hitch and # C45067 ball mount are Class III rated and the receiver is 2" while the bracket you referenced is for 1-1/4" receivers. Instead, you would want to use Curt Sway Control Bar # 17200 along with the Sway Control Bracket # RP26003. I've attached a link to the install video of the Curt Sway Control Bar as well as links to a pair of video reviews on these...

  • Recommendations for 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited Towing a 5x8 Hiker Highway Deluxe Trailer
  • Trailer Brakes are not required on most trailers under 3,000 lbs unless otherwise stated by the local authorities. This should not be an issue with safety behind your 2014 Subaru Outback, but you can add them if desired. I would just need you to pull a hub and let me know the number on the grease seal and the face of the 2 bearings in that hub. With that info I can get you the parts needed for the upgrade. The bigger issue with a trailer this size and weight is sway caused by wind...

  • Sway Control That Works With Curt 17301 Weight Distribution System
  • There is an anti-sway bar you can use along with the Curt Trunnion Style Weight Distribution System # 17301. The Curt Friction Sway Control for Weight Distribution Systems # 17200 will work and attach to the hitch ball on the weight distribution system. You will need either 2" hitch ball # A-90 or 2-5/16" hitch ball # 19286. I've attached a link to a video review of the sway control unit for you to take a look at as well as a link to the instructions.

  • Will Curt Replacement Ball and Plate Assembly Work With Pro Series/Reese Friction Sway Control
  • Yes, the Replacement Ball and Plate Assembly for Curt Friction Sway Control System # C17201 will work with your Pro Series/Reese Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660 as the balls are the same size of 1-1/4 inches. The exact replacement for the Pro Series/Reese is the Replacement Ball-Plate Assembly for Reese Friction Sway Control System # RP58062, but you can use the Curt version without any problem.

  • Replacement Clips Compatible with Curt Friction Sway Control System
  • For a Curt Friction Sway-Control Bar like # 17200 or the Reese # 83660 you can use the Replacement Ball and Plate Assembly for Curt Friction Sway Control System # C17201. This will include the frame ball and hardware as well as two clips. The clips are not available separately. Spring Clips for Hitch Pins like # 337HP9 will work for that application as well even though the styles are different.

  • Can Trailer be Backed Up With Curt MV Weight Distribution System Installed
  • The Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17052 does allow you to back up, however it doesn't include sway control with it. To add that you would need a friction sway control unit like the Curt # 17200 but by adding this you wouldn't be able to back up without initially disconnecting the friction sway control. If you are looking for a chain style weight distribution (WD) system then we have the Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW1006 which integrates the anti-sway so you don't have to worry about...

  • Recommended Friction Sway Control Bar for Weight Distribution System
  • The Anti-Sway bars are a nice addition to weight distribution systems that do not have a built in sway control function. I'd recommend the Curt Friction Sway Control for Weight Distribution Systems, # 17200, which is an easy to use option that uses friction pads as resistance against a telescoping interior arm. This is an independent sway control system that works to resist sway once it has started. The tension is adjustable to meet your specific needs. If the shank of your weight distribution...

  • How to Use Weight Distribution/Sway Control on Pole Tongue Trailer
  • Friction-style sway control units like # 17200 from Curt can be used on a-frame trailers but not on a straight pole tongue trailer due to interference with turning clearance. On a pole tongue trailer it is possible to add weight distribution systems that have integrated sway control, rather than a separate friction unit, by using a pole tongue adapter like # RP3280 or # RP58393.

  • Can the Curt Friction Sway Control 17200 be Mounted on Driver Side
  • You can use the Curt friction style sway control, # 17200 on the left or right side. You will need to loosen the handle and the other bolt below it, pull the inside arm out, flip it over, then reinsert it. You will then need to unscrew the handle on top and the nut. Completely remove them both and the mounting plate. Then rotate the plate 180 degrees and put the handle where the nut was and the nut where the handle was. Then, when you flip the unit over to use on the other side of...

  • When Does Trailer Sway Control Allow Backing Up Trailer
  • If a trailer uses a friction-style sway control mechanism like # 17200 it cannot be backed up until you disconnect or release the tension on that device. On the other hand, trailers with weight distribution systems that have integrated sway control, such as the Curt TruTrack # C17500, can be backed up without issue. Being able to back up is only one advantage of the integrated systems. Their main benefit is that they shift trailer tongue weight back onto the vehicle's front axle. The...

  • Reducing Sway with Existing Weight Distribution System When Large Vehicles Pass On Highway
  • The type of sway you're describing is certainly something that a weight distribution system (with integrated sway control) can help reduce or quickly resolve but it's also something that's hard to avoid when towing. Any time you get passed by a big semi-truck on the highway or you experience high crosswinds, trailer sway/movement is an unfortunate inevitability that components like your WD system can work to limit but not ultimately prevent altogether. With that being said depending...

  • Weight Distribution System Needed for 3,000 lb and 6,000 lb Trailers
  • I can help you find a Weight Distribution (WD) system that works for you, but since it looks like you will have a pretty big range of weight capacities it is impossible to use the same WD system without changing out at least the arms. You will want to choose a WD system with a Tongue Weight (TW) range that the Total Tongue Weight (TTW) of your towing setup falls in the middle of. To find the TTW of your towing setup you will need to add the TW of your fully loaded and ready-to-go trailer...

  • Installation Instructions for Curt Friction Bar Style Sway Control 17200
  • The spacer plate and ball plate on the Curt friction sway control # 17200 need to be mounted to the side of the trailer frame at a specific measurement so the unit can work properly. If you measure from the center of the cavity in the coupler where the hitch ball would go back along the frame rail 24 inches, that is where the center of the ball on the spacer plate will need to be. The images in the instructions show a lot of top-down views to give you a better look at how the measurement...

  • What is the Difference Between the Curt 17200 and Reese 83660 Friction Sway Controls?
  • The Curt Friction Sway Control, # 17200 and the Reese Friction Sway Control, # 83660 are very similar. Friction sway control systems are a simple design and don't vary much in how they work. As soon as your trailer begins to move out of line, the friction pads inside the unit make contact with one another and create resistance to help reduce any further side-to-side movement. Both will reduce trailer sway caused by winds, passing trucks, winding roads or sudden maneuvers. Both will need...

  • Recommended Sway Control for 4,200 Trailer
  • The Curt Friction Sway Control for Weight Distribution Systems # 17200 is a good option to assist with sway control if you already have a weight distribution system or if you have a ball mount that is able to use Sway Control # RP26003. A better option would be to get a weight distribution system with sway control like the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA92-00-0800. This is rated for total tongue weights between 400 and 800 lbs. That total tongue weight is...

  • Recommended Sway Control For Trailer Without Weight Distribution System Installed
  • Typically, when a statement like shank not included is mentioned it is pertaining to a weight distribution system. Since you said you do not have a WD system and only want to install sway control it would not be needed. If you choose to install a sway control unit like the Curt Friction Sway Control, part # 17200 without a weight distribution system installed you will need a bracket that attaches to your ball mount. If you have a 2 inch drawbar I recommend part # RP26003, and for a...

  • Sway Control Recommendation for a 30 foot Bumper Pull Trailer
  • The Curt Friction Sway Control part # 17200 that you referenced would be an excellent choice for your trailer. Since it is longer than 26 feet you would want to run a unit on either side of your trailer. The best way to fight sway is proper trailer loading though. Sway is usually caused by having too much or too little tongue weight on the trailer. If you can get your tongue weight to be between 10 and 15 percent of the total trailer weight the trailer shouldn't sway under normal circumstance...
