Curt Accessories and Parts - 17200

  • Curt

Friction-style sway control system uses a telescoping bar with friction pads to fight trailer sway. Adjustable tension lets you set the right amount of resistance for your setup. Attaches to your trailer and weight distribution system or ball mount.

Features:

  • Friction-style sway control effectively fights trailer sway after it begins
    • Reduces side-to-side movement caused by winds, passing traffic, curving roads, or sudden maneuvers
  • Bar unit houses the sway control mechanism
    • Interior arm telescopes in and out as your trailer moves
    • Friction pads rub against each other to create resistance
  • Adjustable tension lets you set the perfect amount of control and resistance
    • Tension-adjustment screw easily turns in 1/4" increments to fine-tune tension
    • Built-in lever lets you disengage the system to completely release tension
  • Trailer-mounted ball lets you connect the bar unit to your trailer frame
    • May be mounted to either side of your trailer
    • Bolt-on installation with included self-tapping screws
  • 1-1/4" Hitch ball mounts on weight distribution system head to provide attachment point for sway control unit
    • Included adapter bracket can be welded to system head if there is no ball mount platform
  • Easy to remove - simply unclip the bar unit from each attachment ball using the included safety clips
  • 1-Year limited warranty

Note: Not for use on trailers with surge brakes. It is recommended that you remove this sway control unit before backing up/reversing and before towing in slippery conditions such as on wet, icy, gravel, or snow-covered roads.

When installing this sway control system, follow the included instructions and measure 24" straight back from the center of the coupler along the frame of the trailer to determine the location of the spacer plate and trailer-mounted attachment ball. To achieve proper alignment, the spacer plate may not be necessary in every application.

Curt Sway Control on Trailer Frame

One friction-style sway control can be used for trailers with up to 6,000-lb GTW. If your trailer's GTW is between 6,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs, you will need 2 sway-control units, 1 on either side of the trailer. You will also want to use 2 units if your trailer is 26' or longer.

I purchased a Curt sway bar kit for my camper and have had great success with it. I have purchased items from etrailer in the past and always had great service. I will continue to order from them in the future and recommend to my friends and family. 641033

I never thought I needed a weight disturbing hitch cause I had a 3/4 ton truck. I never realized how unsafe it was before. Stress free driving now. 448978

Easy to install. I had to do a little welding, but nothing that I did not expect having read a lot about the product. It is definitely well made and I look forward to trying it out with weight on the trailer. I bought this a snowmobile trailer having had issues on the highway when a Tractor Trailer passes me. 585773

We are pulling a 3800 lbs travel trailer with a 2014 Acura MDX. The sway control has made a world of a difference. You can barely feel the crosswinds and a semi truck passing by causes only minor side motion. Highly recommend this product. 291978

Bought this to use while pulling my 27 foot camper with my Chevy Tahoe on the interstate. Made all the difference in the world and is the best money out side of weight distribution bars I have spent on the camper. I will add I did recently spend the money to upgrade to a dual cam type weight and sway control system, but had I not wanted to spend the big bucks, this little guy does all you need. Bought this not realizing my trailers frame isnt large enough for the mounting bracket supplied. My frame is 3 on edge, while the bracket is the same. That would put the holes and self taping screws uncomfortably close to if not through the edge of the frame. Am going to try to fashion some clamping mechanism to hold the bracket on. Worst case, it slip and I dont have sway control, but thats the situation Im in now anyway. This is on a 3500 lb. 6x8 utility trailer.

Rather than trying to fabricate new mounts, the ball plate can be welded on. A certified welder can complete the task and you will have the ball solidly mounted without risking the trailer frame and losing the sway control bar. The only downside of course, is that it won' be easy to remove if you decide you don't want the ball on the frame any more.

The anti sway bar works well and well worth buying and installing. There are 3 things I would say about it. 1. It has a 4 bolt mounting plate instead of 6. Disadvantage: poorer force distribution, Advantage: less drilled holes to weaken frame. 2.Could use better instructions on how to set it. It really is quite useless if you set it too loose. 3. Watch out for the front clip. Mine came off but the sway bar stayed attached (that's a good thing). I put a safety wire around the safety clip now. 481919

Curt Weight distribution hitch assembly including dual Curt 17200 sway control bars for our heavy 30 foot RV. Purchased through Etrailer Corp. the information from Etrailer was fantastic on which hitch assembly was best for my application, the hitch, bars, sway arms were delivered exactly on time with no scratches or damage. My light weight 2010 pick pulled well and was level and handled winds and passing semi trucks in the wind a pleasure! Unfortunately I don't have pictures to show because I have recently bought a new F-350 and a new 40' -5th wheel trailer and from Etrailer purchased a Demco 18K Hijacker Auto Slide 5th wheel Hitch that works fantastically. Thank you Etrailer for best prices and service! 373934

The advantage Ive found purchasing from etrailer is that I can buy only the parts I need for multiple trailers that I own. My two primary trucks have the hitches and sway bars in them. By buying the other parts from etrailer all six of my trailers can be connected without effort of moving clamps at any time.

The sway control kit I ordered went on the receiver of my travel trailer easily and fits well. I tested the turn radius to see how sharp of a turn it would make without "hitting" and it performed perfectly. I haven't had the chance to take it on the road yet but don't anticipate any problems. 485830

The unit definitely eliminated most if not all of the sway. My only issue is with the clips used to hold the unit into the ball. They’re not strong enough. • Sway Control Options for a Forest River Wolf Pup Towed by a 2017 Ford F-150
We do have options for you to add just sway control to your setup but there are a few things to note. One of the most effective methods to fighting sway control is making sure your trailer is loaded properly. This means that the loaded tongue weight (TW) of your trailer is 10-15% of your loaded trailer. You can use a scale like # 5780 to help you accomplish this. When your trailer is properly loaded then adding a sway control unit is your next step up to help control your trailer. One...

  • Reducing Sway with Existing Weight Distribution System When Large Vehicles Pass On Highway
The type of sway you're describing is certainly something that a weight distribution system (with integrated sway control) can help reduce or quickly resolve but it's also something that's hard to avoid when towing. Any time you get passed by a big semi-truck on the highway or you experience high crosswinds, trailer sway/movement is an unfortunate inevitability that components like your WD system can work to limit but not ultimately prevent altogether. With that being said depending...

The Curt Friction Sway Control Bar # 17200 that you referenced will not limit or affect the turning clearance when towing with your 2012 Ram 1500. The only precaution you will want to take with this installed is when you are backing up the trailer, as this can potentially put too much stress on the friction arm.
