Hey Ron, thanks for reaching out. Connecting the Curt # C44ER directly to the positive battery terminal is correct, so you did not mess up that part. The converter is designed to have constant 12V power from the battery through the included 10-amp fuse; it turns the trailer-light circuits on and off based on the signals coming from the vehicle.
If the trailer lights stay on after the Rogue is completely shut down, I recommend checking the white ground wire first and making sure it has a clean, solid connection to the vehicle body. Then unplug the trailer and test the 4-way itself; if one or more pins stay powered after the vehicle has fully gone to sleep, the converter may be receiving a lingering vehicle signal or the converter box itself may have failed internally. The converter boxes failing is rare but not unheard of. If that is the case, we will have to get you a new one.
Give that a try and let me know how it goes.
What kind of trailer are you hauling?

I had the same issue with my first purchase. Everything worked perfectly. I picked up the U-Haul trailer and even if the Rogue was off and lights were off the trailer lights were on. Their was an issue with the trailer lights, it wasn't anything I did or anything wrong with the harness. I hooked up to my buddy's trailer when I got home from my trip and it was fine. I ended up trading the 2021 for a 2023 , my wife likes her rogue. I bought another trailer hitch and harness and never had the issue again.
