Was Strength Testing Performed On Benton MoveHitch

Question:

I have not been able to find a good review with wobble, rattle, shake and sag test on the Benton MoveHitch cargo Carrier. Have you all done such a review. My concern is about the rigidity, twist and sag at the pivot bracket. Thanks, Frank

Hey Frank! This is a newer product, so there aren't many long-term owner reviews available yet. That said, we have done extensive testing on the Benton MoveHitch # B86VR.

A strain gauge was used to measure the forces the carrier experiences during normal highway driving, speed bumps, hard braking, and similar real-world conditions. Those measurements were then used to calibrate our test machines so they could accurately simulate those loads. Competitive carriers were tested first to establish a baseline, and the Benton MoveHitch exceeded those benchmarks in all of the completed testing.

In addition to vibration and impact testing, the carrier also underwent static load testing with the weight centered on the platform, as well as offset to one side to simulate uneven cargo loading and the twisting forces that can occur in real-world use.

Beyond the lab testing, we also had the carrier installed on vehicles and driven both loaded and unloaded to verify its real-world performance. Based on all of that testing, I wouldn't have any concerns about rigidity, twist, or sag at the pivot bracket when the carrier is used within its 500 lb capacity.

We will use it on the back of a travel trailer, for miscellaneous items, but will never come close to the 500 pound capacity. My concern is about the inertia force multiplied by bouncing, specifically a the folding pivot bracket. The video review that Evangeline does, seems to show some sag to the right when it is loaded. The image in your reply, I think, is from taht video and the carrier appears to sag to the right. Thanks, Frank

@FrankF I understand the concern. Dynamic loads from bumps and trailer movement are one of the reasons we performed both vibration/impact testing and the offset static load testing. Those tests are specifically intended to evaluate the kinds of twisting forces you're describing at the pivot bracket. I wouldn't read too much into a still frame from the video. Camera angle, suspension movement, and the way the carrier is loaded can make it appear to lean even when everything is functioning normally. Based on the engineering testing and our real-world evaluation, I am confident the pivot bracket is more than capable of handling those forces on your travel trailer.

Thanks for all the testing info. It is good to know you tested it with the weight offset too since my cargo probably won't always be perfectly centered.

@BrianM you're welcome! That was definitely an important part of the testing since real-world cargo isn't always perfectly centered or evenly distributed. As long as you stay within the 500 lb capacity and properly secure your cargo, I wouldn't have any concerns with the # B86VR.
