etrailer cargo carrier

Notes:

  • This is not rated for use on the back of an RV or motorhome. For motorhome or RV use the e99050 RV bumper cargo carrier instead.
  • The D-shaped pin included with this cargo carrier will not work on Toyota OEM hitches as the pin is not long enough.

This cargo carrier lets you transport your gear on the back of your vehicle. It tilts down for cargo area access even when it's loaded with gear, and you can fold it up against the back of your vehicle when it's not in use. It has raised side rails that help contain your gear and provide tie-down points, and the steel mesh floor offers stability for your cargo.

Tilting and Folding Design

etrailer cargo carrier

The carrier tilts down - even when it's loaded with gear - so you can easily access your vehicle's rear cargo area. Before you tilt the carrier make sure your cargo is strapped down and secure. Simply support the front edge with one hand, remove the pins (standard 5/8" or 16 mm diameter 2" hitch pins) located in the upper and center shank holes, and gently lower the carrier.

etrailer cargo carrier

When the carrier is not being used, you can fold it up against the back of your vehicle. This lets you fit into your garage and other tight parking spaces without removing the basket. To fold the basket up, just remove the pin from the center shank hole, fold the rack up toward your vehicle, then reinsert the pin into the bottom shank hole.

Raised Side Rails

etrailer cargo carrier

The carrier has raised side rails that help keep your cargo in place. The rails also provide multiple anchor points for a cargo net, bungee straps, or other tie-downs.

Angled and Extended Shank

etrailer cargo carrieretrailer cargo carrier

The shank on this carrier is raised to improve ground clearance, and to make it easier for you to load and unload your cargo. It also extends the basket away from your vehicle, which helps prevent contact with your bumper or rear-mounted spare tire when the carrier is folded up.

Easy Assembly and Durable Construction

etrailer cargo carrier

The carrier is easy to assemble. Simply bolt it together with the included hardware. The basket is made of heavy-duty steel with a rust-resistant black powder coat finish, and it has an easy-to-clean mesh floor. You can add a light kit (sold separately), which is required if your gear blocks your vehicle's tail lights.

Automatic Hitch Pin Hole Alignment

Alignment Collar

The stop collar automatically aligns the pin holes on the shank and your hitch every time you install the carrier. It prevents you from having to get on your hands and knees to check for pinhole alignment. It's quick and easy to install, just slide the collar onto the shank, insert the carrier into your hitch, align the pin holes, slide the collar up against your hitch, and tighten down the bolt with included hand knobs. Once it's set up you never have to adjust it again.

Anti-Rattle Hitch Pin

etrailer cargo carrier

An anti-rattle hitch pin is included for securing the carrier to the hitch receiver. Align the hole in the shank with the hole in your vehicle's hitch, insert the pin into the hole, and secure with the clip. This will reduce noise and movement of the carrier in your hitch. For added security, swap out the included pin for the etrailer D-Shape Anti-Rattle Locking Pin (e43JR, sold separately) and enjoy all the anti-rattle benefits with extra peace of mind.

After first unboxing and assembly, the cargo carrier is good quality and a heavy duty build. The packaging was sufficiently padded and the instructions were easy to follow but have small font. Unfortunately, the assembly wrenches provided were not easy to use and the hardware could have been coated with a superior exterior grade finish. And after putting it together, I leaned all of my weight on the cargo carrier and it easily held my weight of 240lbs, as expected. I have already purchased a light kit and license plate kit for my 4Runner because at first look it may be difficult to see the license plate with my full length cargo bag.

Used this rack on a 14k road trip from Florida to British Columbia through the Yukon territory and Alaska. We carried a full load on it with no concerns or problems. I would highly recommend it.

by:

Excellent Product. Easy to assemble and very sturdy. Not to heavy and straight forward installation. Drove 600 miles to Florida for vacation and loaded a bunch of cargo on a Rola Bag. Everything arrived dry and clean. For the first time I could see through the rear window. No rattle, no noise and no issues. I own a Toyota Sequoia and the anti-rattle bolt is barely long enough to install the safety pin. I installed the bolt without the provided washer and it work without any issues. I did order the 2.5" bolt e98911 to resolve this issue. Love the folding feature. very glad I bought this version as I have not removed the rack during the whole vacation. Bought the Lights and Brackets also. If you do not have a 15/16 wrench or socket, I recommend you buy one...makes the install much faster than with the provided tool. The tool does the job in case you don't have a 15/16. Etrailer personnel were amazing.

Experience was great and would recommend you guys to anyone. Was able to call in and spoke to Roxanne. Told her what I was wanting to do and she gave me great recommendations. I’m hitching and cargo carrier shipped quickly. Love that you guys have install videos with accurate info to help speed up the install. Complete assembly of the cargo carrier and installation of the hitch took less than 2 hours. Thank you for the great experience and service.

by:

Just got it but looks like it will work great! Put it all together and is nicely made. Heavy duty! Sticks out past tailgate so I can drop that down while the rack is in the hitch. Exactly what I was looking for!

by:

Heavier than I expected! Quite sturdy! Easy to put together. I needed to buy a 15/16" socket for the hitch pin/bolt. It comes with a hitch pin collar so I need to return the one I ordered.

Hard to screw in bolt when securing cargo carrier. Perhaps if bolt was slightly tapered it might help.

@RichardB I will definitely pass the information along about the screw Richard. Would be nice if there were some wheels on it to dolly when not in use, help with the weight of it.

Holds all my gear. Just what I was hoping for. Now my dogs have the car all to themselves.
Really bummed that there are "Made in China" stickers all over it. I went with etrailer because I thought they were a USA company. I guess no one can turn down that cheap slave labor. Hopefully my gear does not end up on the highway.

etrailer.com IS a US company with our headquarters located in Wentzville, MO about 40 miles west of St. Louis. The carrier is manufactured for us overseas in China.

by:

Step 1 of assembly, the holes do not line up between the basket halves and the connecting bars. This is integral to the structure’s assembly, making it impossible to do. That and the hardware was loose all over the package but luckily seemed to all be there by chance. Seems there was no QA before shipping…makes me quite nervous about installing this on my vehicle.

I would start both screws with your fingers so that it is finger-tight, then torque them intermittently so that they are both tightened in the same degree. If you tighten one bolt all of the way, then do the next, it may not end up straight.

Product iss great! Used this carrier in combination with the etrailer cargo bag (Item #988501) on our 13 hour trip from IL to beaches of SC and never heard or felt it.

I didn't realize that this carrier hitch has a threaded hitch pin for anti-rattle, so I didn't have to use my standard hitch anti-rattle device. The assembly and installation were pretty easy and the included hitch collar made subsequent attachments to my hitch a breeze. While the included wrenches we ok, I would recommend using a socket wrench as it is much more suited for the job.

I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that my 2014 GMC Acadia hatch had just enough clearance to open without using the tilt feature. BTW, the tilt feature on a loaded carrier definitely requires more than one person.

Only con I can think of is that the pins for the folding feature do not slide in very easily, maybe because the holes don't line up perfectly. It definitely takes some twisting of the pins at the same time as fiddling withe the angle of the carrier to get the pin thru. It is do-able, but takes some "practice" for sure.

EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE NOTE:
After our trip I was looking for a locking hitchpin (item #e99047) and noticed that the price of the carrier was about $30 less than when I originally purchased a month earlier. etrailer does have a competitor price match guarantee policy, but nothing specific to etrailer branded products. I asked them about this and they immediately refunded the price difference. Regardless of if the had done this, I still would have purchased the locking hitchpin, but this proves their excellence in customer service.

by:

This thing is a the flimsiest piece of junk I have ever purchased. First, it arrived and it was welded incorrectly so it wouldn’t fold. No biggie but on first use, it literally couldn’t handle holding a pellet grill of 75lbs. Even if it’s hopper was full, it would have only been ~100lbs. As soon as a new one arrives, not the same one, I’ll be returning it. Pay a little more and get a better product.

Great luggage rack! 4,500 miles in 3 weeks on the first trip and it performed exactly as intended. It didn't sag or rattle. We used a Rola bag with ratchet straps for extra stability. We loaded luggage, too many other bags and fishing gear for a family of four. Better than buying a bigger vehicle. As the picture shows, it also makes a great tailgate/table for fishing or camping.

The luggage rack worked well until the hitch receiver bolt sheared off when I tried to unscrew. We then needed to cut the shank and the receiver from the truck. I was told the replacement part I needed would not be sold to me individually and I would need to buy a complete luggage rack. I offered to buy it and did not ask for a free replacement. I was also told the product has a lifetime warranty but that the warranty would not be honored because I cut it from my hitch receiver. That doesnt make sense. Why would an American company not offer the part that needs to be replaced? This is the USA. We fix what needs to be fixed instead of just buying another one. I am very disappointed. Now Ill need to find an American company that will produce the replacement part. Maybe etrailer will help before its too late. I really hope so.

At this time, we do not have replacement shanks available for this cargo carrier. If the bolt was left on the vehicle for a long period of time, it may have rusted inside. In that case, some lubricant can be used to try and penetrate the rust. If that does not work, you can drill it out with a bit.

by:

Item received is badly damaged. No region of the cargo carrier that was not damaged. If possible will update this rating if eTrailer quickly fixes this problem.

by:

Excellent quality. Fairly easy to assemble. Only problem is with the bottom hitch pin hole which is used to support the carrier in the upright position. It is really hard to get the pin to go thru. I had to wallow the hole out a bit.

by:

This will work on a Jeep Library if you add a hitch extension. I welded an 7” extension to the receiver opening. (No rattling) If you weld it, make sure it’s level or the carrier won’t be. With the spare on the back of my Jeep the carrier wouldn’t fold up. Does now with room to go. I have a Motorhome and this is my tow vehicle. Carrier is used mainly for bikes.
I was tired of booking up my small boat trailer with spare in the way. Now ball is accessible. This is a well built carrier. Doesn’t move or rattle at all. Thanks etrailer.

As you can see, my previous review it it it is primarily used for bicycles on trips on my tow vehicle. Hav used it only once in that capacity since I got it because of this Covid lockdown. Worked very good. Used occasionally on the Liberty for carrying large bags of pet food, topsoil, etc. when I’m not using a pickup. No complaints about this carrier.

by:

This carrier worked out great. The tilt down feature is helpful to have but I didn't really need it. However, the fold up feature was helpful when driving around, so I recommend that as a convenience.

The only thing I had trouble with was the hitch bolt. I have a Thule bike rack that I've used with my truck hitch receiver and never had a problem, but this rack's hitch bolt was a real pain to get in at first. Don't be dismayed. With the rack off of the vehicle, I used some WD-40 and some lithium grease on the bolt and then used an adjustable wrench to screw it in and out a number of times. I noticed a bunch of either paint or metal shards gumming up the threads on the bolt each time I removed it. After about 5 times of screwing it in and out, wiping off the bolt with a towel, adding some more grease once in a while, it got to the point that I could screw it in and out by hand pretty easily. Problem solved.

I'm really happy with this rack. It fit two big coolers of food and beer plus beach umbrellas and other stuff. It's really strong and sturdy. The biggest issue was not the weight on the rack, but whether the rear suspension on the Highlander could hold it with our other junk in the back plus passengers. :-)

Its been a year since I purchased this and I used it on another vacation, driving through multiple states. Its very sturdy and I continue to be pleased with this purchase. I will say I had some trouble with the hitch bolt again. It was impossible to screw in by hand and using an adjustable wrench is a tedious chore. I didnt have time before leaving on the trip to do what I did the last time wd-40lithium. It would be nice to have a better locking system...something other than a bolt that screws in. Ill have to look for that. All things considered, Im still happy with this rack and I would still recommend it. Im sure Im going to be using this for many more years.

Etrailer Cargo Carrier 24x60 2" Hitch. Bought it for my electric scooter plus. Simple to put together, took less than an half hour and the tools needed came with. Now ready for travel.

by:

I haven’t yet used it, but assembly was quick and easy. The only reason I gave it a four out of five is because I wish the shank included a tube to use as a conduit for the wiring harness, or some means to hide and protect the wiring harness for the additional light kit I purchased with the cargo rack.

by:

I love this unit! I’m an avid Camper and Jeeper. My rig has big tires including the spare that requires additional clearance. In addition to hauling my gear, I had concerns about ground clearance off roading and stability.

This unit exceeded my expectations on every point! I can even open the tailgate with the unit on and it still has enough clearance to fold up when not loaded.

In addition to a great product, the order was confirmed and shipped same day and on my doorstep two days later. It was pretty easy to put together but having a second person to help and fit it on the first time is helpful.

Great product!

The carrier really gave you a lot of extra space, James! You will be ready for anything it looks like. Any more trips lined up this summer?

by:

Feels like a good cargo carrier, however, nowhere in the description could I find the measurement from the hitch pin hole to the front of the cargo basket. (For future reference, this measurement is 19 inches.) I was disappointed with how far away from my vehicle this puts the carrier, because more distance from the vehicle puts more strain on the vehicle hitch.

by:

The tray has helped us unload what we would otherwise carry in the Highlander such as the Clam (tent-like gazebo), outdoor mat (10 x 15 foot) and black water tote. None of these items were ideal to put into our Casita travel trailer either. So now we have less stuff to rummage thru in the SUV for packing/unpacking. A disappointment has been the appearance of rust at different places on the tray at only a year old. At some point I will use Rustoleum to address that issue.

by:

Seems to be good quality and heavy duty. Assembly was straight forward, but "real" tools work better. My only real complaint is that the surrounding "fence is NOT 5 1/2" tall! It is about 3" Therefore when I add the locking enclosure I do NOT have the 30 1/2" that I thought that I would have. Now the totes that I bought do not fit! I will now have to purchase 6 long shackle padlocks to get the top secured. All that was needed for a 5 star would have been CORRECT specs.! You took the time/effort to make note of the change of light kit needed to purchase, but not the change in the carrier that made it necessary.

The carrier worked well for the most part. Although I was well under the 500lb. weight limit, the carrier still scraped the ground going over what would normally be barley noticed bumps. Bridge expansion joints are an example. Maybe my Subaru Forester is just too low. I will need a riser hitch to solve the problem for the next trip. It is well made and I would recommend it.

by:

Has worked really well for my purposes. I had 4 snow tires in it for my subaru outback on a 4000 mile cross country trip and no problems. Some negatives: the pin is a smaller size and my locking pin doesn't fit. There is rust starting to creep up from areas they were unable to spray with the powder coat. Carrier is not clearly marked or illuminated so I had to buy my own retrospective tape to mark the back and edges of the carrier. Light kit is sold separately but I was able to make my own for the back and bottom when the carrier is flipped up. Other than that it's done its job very well. A note to others who've had issue with the carrier bottoming out and scraping you can pull the through pin out and leave the top pin in and it will flip up if it does scrap. But you have to do this before you get somewhere you're going to bottom out, and obviously you want to replace the through pin before you get going too fast.

Fix the rust issue and add some retroflective tape like I did and this product would be 5 stars.

Glad to hear it's been working well for you, Matt. Adding on some kind of reflective tape or something is definitely a good idea. Not all vehicles need (or want) lights on these so they will always be an add on part, but I will see what I can do about some kind of reflector. This does take a very specific pin style and you would need the etrailer D-Shape Anti-Rattle Locking Hitch Pin # e43JR in order to lock it in the hitch.

  • Can Gas Tank/Propane Tank be Carried on etrailer Hitch Cargo Carrier
Hey Gus, you can carry a propane tank or a gas can on the etrailer cargo carrier part # e98874 even though when you think about it does seem a little sketchy. There are no laws against it and as long as you are smart and safe about it it's totally fine. Do you have tie downs/ratchet straps?

  • Aluminum Cargo Carrier Upgrade for Coastal Areas
Hey Timothy! I’m sorry to hear your etrailer 60x24 Folding Cargo Carrier # e98874 is already starting to show some rust. Living near the ocean is definitely tough on exposed steel, even with a protective powder coat. The Benton MoveHitch 60x24 Cargo Carrier # B86VR would be a really nice upgrade for your situation. Its aluminum construction won’t rust like steel, so it’s much better suited for the salty, humid air you’re dealing with in Florida. I’d still recommend rinsing it periodically...

  • Best Trailer Hitch And Install Video For 2025 Chrysler Pacifica
Hello Shara, thanks for reaching out. I see that you already ordered the # e98903 hitch which is for the 2025 Pacifica, but I wanted to reply anyway to make sure all your questions were answered. To answer your first question, we do have a video showing this hitch installed on a 2023 Pacifica, and I have linked it for you below. Installation will be virtually identical to the 2025 model, so if you are planning to install yourself that video will be a big help. I actually installed a hitch...

  • What is Second Smaller Pin Hole for on Draw-Tite Hitch Receiver
Hey Amy, thanks for reaching out! You'll need to use the larger of the two pin holes on your Draw-Tite hitch when installing the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874. Back in the day, Draw-Tite had a special J-Style pin that fit in both pin holes but they got rid of that pin a few years ago. The larger hole is for standard hitch pins so that's what you'll want to stick with! Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Best Bike Rack For Carrying Tern GSD E-Bike With Tesla Model Y
Hello Eric, thanks for reaching out. We do have a rack that seems to meet all of your requirements. What I recommend is the following: - Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 2" Hitches - Frame Mount # HLY84FR This rack is great for heavy bikes, it has a weight capacity of up to 80 lbs per bike. It also can accommodate wheelbases up to 60", so it sounds like this will work well for your bike. Just keep in mind the rack is a frame mount, so you may need an adapter...

  • Trailer Hitch and Lightweight Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2020 Toyota Highlander LE
The best combination for you to carry a lightweight cargo carrier behind your 2020 Toyota Highlander is the Curt Trailer Hitch # C99FR and the 22-1/2x49 Curt Cargo Carrier, Item # C18113. Both of these have a 500 lb tongue weight rating which look to match up with the max rating of your vehicle - you will want to double check this in your owner's manual though just to be on the safe side. The Curt hitch features a hidden crosstube so all you're going to see is the receiver. This means...

  • Will The 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier e98874 Work On A 2025 Sprinter Van?
Hello Tom, thanks for reaching out. Yes, the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874 will work with your 2025 Sprinter 3500 as long as you’ve got a 2" hitch receiver on the van, which most of those do. The big thing to think through on a Sprinter is rear door access. This carrier does tilt away, which helps a lot, but with a van like yours that has wide-opening rear doors, clearance can still be tight depending on what you’ve got loaded. If the carrier is empty or lightly loaded, you’ll...

  • Will The Curt Clevis Pin C45804 Work With The etrailer Cargo Carrier e98874
Hello Steve, thanks for reaching out. The etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874 does use a 5/8" pin, so yes the Curt Clevis Pin # C45804 will work with it. The grab handle on the pin will make removing it much easier. I have found that if you lift up slightly on the cargo carrier when you try removing the pin it can help it come out easier.

  • Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2015 Jeep Wrangler
The etrailer Folding Cargo Carrier part # e98874 that you referenced should work well on your 2015 Wrangler and clear the spare when folded up. If you check out the video I attached you will see that this carrier should clear the spare when folded up and should allow the rear gate to open slightly when the carrier is folded down. It should work well for you.

  • Is License Plate Bracket Needed when Using Cargo Carrier # C18113
If you wanted to mount your license plate to the Curt Cargo Carrier part # C18113 you could but we don't have a specific way to do so. You could attach something like the part # LP35BB to it if you'd be willing to modify the carrier. Now that said we've found that when license plates are obscured by cargo carriers like this police officers generally are not bothered enough to pull people over and give them a hard time. Using a rise adapter to try and gain more ground clearance isn't...

  • Best Trailer Hitch, Cargo Carrier and Cargo Bag for 2018 Infiniti QX60
We have all the best parts to add a hitch, cargo carrier and cargo bag to your 2018 Infiniti QX60, and let's start with the hitch. The best hitch for your 2018 Infiniti QX60 is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76031 because it is has the most ground clearance and bumper clearance of any hitch for your car. This means your cargo carrier is going to be as high off the ground as it can be with this hitch over any other. I have added a photo and a link to a video install on an '18 QX60...

  • How To Carry A Cargo Carrier and Tow A Trailer At The Same Time
It is possible to carry a cargo carrier like part # e98874 and tow a trailer with a vehicle but not in tandem. You would need to use a Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount part # D210 to carry the cargo carrier in the top receiver and then tow the trailer with the ball mount portion like in the photo I attached. The only stipulation is the dual receiver does reduce the tongue weight rating of your hitch in half so you would want to keep that in mind. You also don't really want to use a cargo carrier...

  • Will F-150 Tailgate Make Contact With 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier When Lowered
Hey Adam! I'm confident the 24x60 etrailer Cargo Carrier # e98874 will not be in the way of your tailgate when you lower it. Although we don't have F-150 pictures, we do have some from a Sierra and there was more than enough room. They were even able to put ramps on when it was tilted away. I expect it to be similar on your F-150. What will you be using the carrier for?
