Is the Extra Length on the RockyMounts XL Hitch Bolt in the Threaded Section?

Updated 07/13/2026 | Published 06/30/2026

Question:

I purchased my RockyMount 2-bike hitch mounted rack from yall a while back, and the bolt that came with it doesnt have enough threading along the length of it. I see that you sell an XL version of this bolt and the description says it is 15mm longer than the standard issued bolt. My question is if the additional length is the threaded section or just the straight section where the lock attaches. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for your help!

Hello Teresa,

Thanks for finally finding a reason to write into us =)

I couldn't find those measurements published anywhere for the Replacement XL Hitch Bolt for RockyMounts Hitch-Mounted Bike Racks # RKY39TR, so I took a walk out to the warehouse to compare one with the standard threaded hitch pin that comes with the RockyMounts bike racks. As luck would have it, I have a RockyMounts rack on my own vehicle, so I borrowed my hitch bolt for a side-by-side comparison. Please see attached image.

The extra length is in the threaded portion of the anti-rattle hitch pin, not the smooth section where the lock attaches. The standard threaded hitch pin that came with your rack has about 1-3/4 inches of usable threads, while the XL version # RKY39TR has about 2-11/32 inches of usable threads.

That design makes sense because it allows the anti-rattle feature to work on vehicles with thicker receiver tube walls, like the Toyota Tundra and a few others, where the standard bolt can come up a little short.

How often are you able to get out and ride? Do you have a specific trail you like to go to? I was able to get out early this last weekend to beat the heat here in Missouri.
