What Swing Away can I Use on the Back of My Sienna for Transporting a Scooter?

Updated 06/23/2026 | Published 06/19/2026

Question:

I have 2012 Toyota Sienna XLE , I just purchased from ETrailer a Curt low profile class 3 hitch. Im going to get an aluminum cargo carrier with a ramp rated for 500 to carry a mobility scooter weighing 207. Which of your passenger side swing arm hitch receivers do you recommend. I looked at what you have, read reviews and watched your videos. Now we were told by scooter provider to off load scooter before swinging the arm so that we can access the hatchback of the minivan. But in case of emergency it would be good if swing arm was rated for 350. I also what to be assured the minivan Curt hitch is rated for the appropriate tongue weight of which we loose 50 from using a swing arm attachment.

Hello Michele,

Thanks for writing in, and I'm glad you found us!

The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13343 is a great fit for your 2012 Toyota Sienna. The hitch itself is rated for 525 pounds of tongue weight, which is the vertical load applied to the hitch, and it also has a 3,500-pound towing capacity if you ever decide to tow a trailer in the future.

That said, I would take a look at your Toyota owner's manual as well. In most cases, the hitch is rated for more than the vehicle itself, and you're always limited by the lowest-rated component in the system.

For a passenger-side swing away, the Kuat Pivot XD # KU37KR would be the option I would look at. It swings toward the passenger side as requested and is one of the heavier-duty swing-away adapters available.

The part that gives me a little pause is the total weight of the setup. The Pivot XD itself weighs about 75 pounds and is rated for up to 350 pounds when the center of the load is within 28 inches of the hitch pin hole. If the load sits farther back, between 28 and 40 inches, the capacity drops to 250 pounds.

Since your scooter weighs 207 pounds, you'll also need to account for the weight of the aluminum carrier itself and the weight of the Pivot XD. Depending on which carrier you choose and how far the scooter sits from the hitch, you could end up very close to or over one of those ratings.

The scooter provider's recommendation to unload the scooter before swinging the arm open is definitely a good practice. Even though the Pivot XD is a robust system, removing the scooter before opening the swing arm reduces stress on both the adapter and the hitch and makes everything easier to operate. If you swing it away the full 40" from the hitch pin hole, it will still support the 207 pounds of your scooter, do you know how much the scooter carrier weighs?

What kind of cargo carrier with ramp are you going with?
