Hi Steve,

The Curt Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeves - 3inch to 2-1/2inch or 2-inch part # C45408 has a pin hole diameter of 3/4". However, since this is adapting all the way down to a 2 inch, you'll need to use a 5/8" pin because the pin hole diameter of a ball mount you want to tow with will be 5/8" in diameter for an accessory that fits a 2 1/2" or 2" hitch. You'll have a small amount of room around the pin hole for the 3 in sleeve, but it will be flush to the pin hole for the 2 1/2" or 2" pin hole of the ball mount. If you're needing a locking hitch pin, I recommend the InfiniteRule Hitch Lock for 3 inch Hitches part # 34061073-D. It's a stainless steel hitch pin lock with a 3 5/8" span, 5/8" pin diameter, and comes with two keys and sits flush agains the side of the hitch tube to reduce slop.

If you need to use an adapter with an extension in the future, please keep in mind that the general rule of thumb is that it will decrease your tongue weight by around 50% due to added leverage.

What do you usually tow with your truck's 3" receiver?

Thank you Claire. I’ll order the 5/8” locking pin you recommended as it should cover the loads. Thanks again!
