Adding Electric Brakes to a 3K Axle ATV Trailer: What You’ll Need

Question:
I’m looking to add electric brakes to my ATV trailer. 15” wheels with a 3k axle. There seem to be so many choices so I’m looking for direction as to what my best option is. I drive a Tacoma so the assist in braking will be very helpful. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hey, great question and adding brakes to that ATV trailer is a really smart move, especially behind a Tacoma.
You’re on the right track looking at a kit like the self-adjusting electric brake assemblies such as part # TX97ZJ electric trailer brake kit. These are a really solid option for typical 3,500 lb axles and will work with your 15" wheels, giving you much better stopping control once paired with a brake controller. They’re also self-adjusting, which means less maintenance over time.
That said, I’ll need a little more info to make sure everything fits correctly. The big thing is your spindle or bearing numbers, since that determines the correct hub-and-drum assemblies to match the brakes. The easiest way to confirm fitment is to pull one of the hubs and check the bearing numbers they’ll be stamped right on the bearings themselves. If you’d rather not take it apart, you can also measure the spindle with a digital caliper where the bearings ride, but the numbers are the most accurate way to make sure we get the right hub and drum setup for you.
Also take a quick look behind your hubs to confirm you have a 4-bolt brake mounting flange, because that’s required to bolt these on.
Once we confirm that, we can get you set up with the right hub/drum combo, wiring, and everything else you’ll need. Do your Tacoma have a factory brake control? If not, we will need to get you set up with a brake controller.
If you can grab those bearing numbers or a couple measurements, I’ll make sure we get you the correct parts.

I found the Terran Brake set to be similar in quality to the OEM units and extremely easy to install. They come completely assembled, simply bolt on the 4 flange bolts and complete the wire connections. A quick and easy installation and you're up and running.
