Replacement Tires for 4.80-12 With 65 MPH Rating

Question:

I have a trailer with 480x12 tires with a 5 lug pattern I want to see if there was a more normal size tire that can travel at 65mph

Hey Don! The best thing to do is stick with your current tire size so you don't have to worry about clearance with a larger tire. You probably have bias ply tires now. I recommend switching to the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire # TT48012C.

This will fit your existing wheel, has a max load of 990 lbs at 90 psi, and a speed rating of M for 81 mph. Radials perform better and last longer than bias ply tires so this will be a nice upgrade.

I’ve drive to Florida from NY the last few years towing my 14’ fiberglass boat on those 4.80r-12 radials and cruise 75mph no problems. I just bought a new trailer ain December and plan on replacing the bias ply with another set of these

Don...I bought two of these for Escapade motorcycle trailer that I pull behind my trike. I've put about 2,000 miles on them without an issue. I did a lot of research before I got them and these were the best I found. They have more plys and a higher speed rating then most. And they were reasonably priced. I've been up to 75-80 MPH for extended periods without any issues.

If you are certain you have adequate clearance to the fenders, or if you can move them they I would go with larger wheels and tires for two reasons: Several tire shops I visited no longer have equipment to dismount and mount 12 inch tires, and larger tires have a greater selection to choose from. For us though, we had to stick with 12 inch tires so we purchased these tires. We are satisfied, as these are great tires and we will buy them again. These seem to give a better ride to the trailer than our previous bias-ply tires, even though we run the same pressure. Best luck!

Hi Don I agree with Robin and John. I use the Taskmaster 4.80R12 Radial Trailer Tire. On my escapade motorcycle trailer also. The one thing I would add is to add 1 oz of ceramic dyna beads in each tire for balance. Not the cheap glass ones. 10 to 20 dollars from Amazon. The trailer will be more stable and less bounce at high speed.
