Hi Jeff, that’s a great question, especially since you’re coming from a coach with air brakes and want something that feels just as reliable and easy to use.

Both the Blue Ox Patriot 3 part # BLU37TR and a permanent system like the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo for Hydraulic brakes part # SM99251 are solid options, but the “best” choice really comes down to how you plan to tow and how much convenience you want day to day. The Patriot 3 is a portable unit that sits on the floor and presses the brake pedal when you slow down. It’s a good fit if you like flexibility or may switch vehicles down the road, and it doesn’t require a more involved install. The tradeoff is you do have to set it up each time you tow.

The Stay-IN-Play Duo is a more permanent system that installs into both the motorhome and your Encore GX. Once it’s in, it’s basically a flip-the-switch setup each time you hook up, with nothing to place on the floor or remove later. For a vehicle you plan to tow regularly, most people find this option more convenient and consistent, especially on longer trips or in situations where you want everything to just work without extra steps.

You will also need a 12 Volt Outlet Kit part # RM-9332 if you go with the Blue Ox setup.

What kind of trips do you enjoy with your Encore GX and new rig, and do you lean more toward simple hookups or the flexibility to switch vehicles down the road?

I first purchased the stay-n-play then looked at the installation instructions. Then looked into having it installed, they wanted $2800 minimum. I returned it and purchased the Blue Ox. My son helped me install it on a 2014 Ford Explorer. Very happy with it. My other son also purchased the Blue ox for his 2024 Jeep Cherokee and he has no complaints. Go with the Blue Ox. It’s easy to set up when towing.

@Mike That's awesome Mike and you got some bonding time with your son in. That's a win-win. I can't even get my teen sons to do their own laundry.

I had both systems and if I had to do it again I’d go with the portable patriot. Takes two minutes to hook it up and if you change cars later you can take it with you for the new ride. I also think its more like your regular brakes. When you hit the brakes theres no lag or hanging up when letting off the brakes. I use it in a 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland and love it. In my built in unit that i had on a Jeep Rubicon you could feel the jeep braking before the coach would. I didn’t like that especially going down hills.

@JohnN That’s a really helpful comparison, especially having used both setups. I know exactly what you mean too, that feeling when the toad seems to push your coach down the hill. Not fun!

@WilliamY That’s awesome to hear, especially putting it through 3,000 miles of winter travel. Sounds like it treated you really well out there. Where did you end up adventuring to?

We have used our Patriot Braking system on a 2019 Ford Fiesta and a 2017 Chevy Equinox with no problems except set-up on the Equinox. I solved that problem by reading the manual. The brake setting needs to be hybrid for the Equinox. We tow behind a 2021 Odyssey 24B, with a Blue Ox tow bar setup. No issues encountered so far.

@ScottS Great tip on using the hybrid setting for the Equinox, Scott. I’m sure that’ll help other customers running into the same thing. Where are you headed next?

I can't compare the two systems, but I can describe our experience with the Blue Ox Patriot. We've just returned from our 2nd southern migration with many trips in between for a total of 10K total miles. We used the Patriot system towing a Jeep Cherokee JL 4 door for all of those miles. The Patriot system hasn't been perfect, but support from eTrailer and Blue Ox has been outstanding! The Blue Ox Patriot monitor failed to power up at about the 1 year mark, and the Patriot brake actuator became nearly impossible to set up at about 18 months. For the failed monitor, we received a new or reconditioned unit from Blue Ox within 3 days, but correcting the actuator setup problem required returning the unit to Blue Ox for 'service.' We dropped off the actuator at FedEx on a Tuesday afternoon and received the serviced unit on the following Saturday. Blue Ox called after the actuator service to explain what they'd done without suggesting the reason(s) for failure. The unit now sets up first time every time, but we're stationary for a few weeks. I'd like to be able to report that the failures are behind us and won't repeat, but I won't know that for a few years. Whatever happens, I'm confident that Blue Ox will stand by their product and their commitment to customer satisfaction.

@GregB Hey Greg, I really appreciate you taking the time to share all of that. That kind of real-world experience over 10,000 miles is incredibly helpful, especially for folks trying to decide between a portable system like the Patriot and something more permanent. We have also had good luck with Blue ox customer service. It sounds like you spend quite a bit of time heading south for those longer trips. Do you have a favorite spot you like to return to each year?
