What Hitch Will Fit My 2012 GMC Savana 3500 4.8L V8 Built on a Cutaway Chassis?

Updated 02/10/2026 | Published 02/06/2026

Question:

I have a 2012 GMC Savana 3500 4.8L V8 cutaway van which was formerly a Penske box truck. I want to install a hitch receiver and think the Buyers Products part 3371801102 is what I need. However, I only see two clearance holes in the end of each frame rail of my truck - rough measurements are 2-5/8inch and 9-1/2inch from the rear end of the frame rails. the 3371801102 has three holes. Im fine drilling that middle hole if I have to, but I want to make sure this isnt indicative of the wrong part for my needs. Also, if your experts have experience with this particular truck, should I be expecting to unbolt and remove my metal grate bumper to make room for the hitch? Totally fine if you dont know. Thank you!

Hello Corey,

Great question, and I’m glad you reached out. I do want to let you know that the Buyers Products 2" Hitch Receiver For GM Express/Savana with Cutaway Chassis # 3371801102 is designed to fit the 2014 - 2026 GMC Savana Van Cutaway Cab and Chassis. Because your Savana is a 2012, this hitch would not be a match, which explains why the hole pattern did not line up with your frame.

At this time, the option we have available for your vehicle is a weld-on style hitch. The Curt Class 5 Universal Weld-on Hitch w/ Brackets - 2" Receiver - 44" Wide # C47CR would be a great choice for a cutaway setup like yours. If you are not an experienced welder, we do recommend having a licensed welder handle the installation to ensure everything is mounted safely and securely.

With cutaway vans like yours, that metal grate or step bumper is usually aftermarket and not something GM standardized, so it can vary a bit from truck to truck. In many cases, the bumper does not need to be permanently removed, but it may need to be unbolted or loosened temporarily during installation to allow the hitch to be positioned correctly.

Since the weld-on hitch mounts directly to the frame rails and sits lower than a factory van hitch, most installers are able to work around the bumper once they can see how everything lines up. A quick test fit will usually make it clear right away whether the bumper is in the way.

What are you planning to use the hitch for, towing, bike rack, etc? Do you already have wiring?
