Can Slightly Shorter Trailer Axle be Used in Place of Longer one
Updated 02/10/2026 | Published 01/20/2026 >
Question:
I have a cattle trailer with 3 - 86 1/2inch hub distance axles on it. Can I replace them with standard 85inch in hub distance axles? This will but the space between the back of the spindle and trailer wall at 1/2inch The tires will still about 1 1/2inch clearance but was needing to know if that is too close for the spindle spacing?

Hey Brian, yes the dimensions you mentioned would allow for a shorter axle to fit and work just fine. You do need to match the spring seat to spring seat dimension exactly though so that the axle can bolt up like it needs to. Do you have that dimension?

Hey Brian, were you able to get the spring seat to spring seat measurement for your cattle trailer axles? Once you have that, it’ll be easier to confirm the right fit. Let me know what you find—I’m here if you need a hand narrowing it down.
