Tech Tip: If don't already have brakes that are free-backing, you'll need to get some. Otherwise, your brakes will keep locking up on you when you're backing up. And trust us on this one - upgrading now will be a lot less work than upgrading your wiring harness and a compatible actuator with an electric lockout.

Never Second-Guess Your Connection Again with the Demco EZ-Latch

Few things matter in towing as much as a secure connection to your hitch ball. Have you ever coupled your trailer, only to re-do the whole thing just convince yourself that you had a secure connection? Heck, maybe you even pushed on your truck a few times just to be certain.

The thing of it is, your basic coupler doesn't really have a mechanism to tell you that it has a firm grasp on the hitch ball. You either just have to eyeball it or try to wiggle the coupler latch until it closes. If there's a significant gap between your ball mount and your hitch ball - otherwise known as highballing - it can put your trailer at risk of becoming disconnected while towing.

The underside of the Demco eZ-Latch shows the inside of the coupler with the latch disengagedThe underside of the Demco eZ-Latch shows the inside of the coupler with the latch engaged

To prevent this, the coupler portion of this trailer brake actuator has an automatic latching mechanism known as the EZ-Latch. To use it, you won't need to do anything different from what you're used to. As you lower the trailer onto the ball using your tongue jack, you'll see the latch rise. Then, just listen for it for the metalic clink . When you hear it, you'll know for certain that you've got a good, strong connection, allowing you to be on the road a little bit quicker and with a lot more confidence.

Built-In Theft Deterrent

Unlike most couplers, which have a pin hole on the handle latch, the EZ-Latch coupler features a hole on the side of the coupler itself. Inserting a coupler lock through this hole will keep the latch from lifting, preventing disconnect and theft.

Sturdy, Corrosion-Resistant Construction

Chances are, you're replacing your actuator because your old one is rusted out. This one will too, but probably only the outside, and that won't be for a long time.

This Demco actuator features a durable zinc coating with a 120-hour salt spray rating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. On the inside, the composite master cylinder is made of corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced nylon to further ensure durability and longevity.

How Does a Surge Brake Actuator Work?

When you're towing, the momentum of your rig pushes and pulls on your hitch ball as you slow to a stop. And with a surge brake actuator, that momentum uses the coupling point to push back on the inner portion of your surge brake actuator, which then compresses the master cylinder inside. As it contracts, it pressurizes your hydraulic brake lines, and ultimately engages your trailer brakes. When you start moving again, your tow vehicle pulls that inner portion back out, allowing the trailers wheels to start rolling again.

Easy install. Well made. Thought maybe for [the price] the grade 8 install bolts and nuts may be included, but not so. Have not towed the trailer yet, but see no reason for it not to function well.

  • New Brake Assemblies, Hub/Drums, Brake Lines, and Bearing Buddy for Trailer with 3,500 lb Axle
For as trashed as those brake assemblies are I am impressed with how spotless that spindle is! Based on the bearing numbers you mentioned you have a #84 spindle and the hub part # AKHD-545-35-G-K is correct. Since this its galvanized it's a really great option as it will fight corrosion. The flexible brake line kits like the part # 18SI-BLKIT is what I would go with. They are just as durable as anything else and a lot easier to install. The brake assemblies # AKFBBRK-35R-D and # AKFBBRK-35L-D...

  • Is There Manual Lockout Available for Demco Surge Actuator part # DM72VR
Demco does not offer a manual lockout for the coupler part # DM72VR but they do offer an electric option with the part # DM5836. They also recommend installing free-backing brake assemblies on the axles instead too which I attached a link to a page that has all of them.

  • Replacement for Atwood 61101 Brake Actuator
The Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator part # DM72VR should be a direct replacement for the Atwood 61101 Brake Actuator that you have now. This newest updated it rated at 7K instead of 6K. This is a bolt on option that mounts on 3" centers. The review you are referring to, the customer did indeed weld the brake actuator to his tongue but this is not required for installation because it is a bolt-on actuator. Unfortunately, we do no offer a bolt-on brake actuator for drum brakes with...

  • Surge Brake Actuator to Replace Atwood 82543
The closest option we have to replace your Atwood 82543 actuator is part # DM72VR. However, it doesn't have the lockout like your Atwood does. To add a lockout use # T4748800 but it's an electric lockout unlike the Atwood's manual lockout. It wires into the reverse light circuit on your truck through the trailer connector. I've attached videos of both actuators for you to take a look at.

  • Solution for Reverse Lockout on Demco DA70 Actuator
The # DM5939 is only compatible with the DA91 like the # DM8759131. Unfortunately, there is no option for manual lockout on a DA70 like the # # DM72VR. There are two ways you can keep your brakes from locking up with this brake actuator. The first is to add a solenoid like the # DM11993. The other option you have is to switch out the brakes on your trailer with free backing brakes like # AKFBBRK-35-D. These brakes won't engage in reverse so there would be no need to add a lockout to your...

  • Replacement for Atwood 84132 Drum Brake Actuator
We have the perfect replacement for your Atwood 84132 drum brake actuator, the Demco # DM72VR. Just like your Atwood, the Demco is for hydraulic drum brakes, rated for 7,000 lbs instead of 6000 lbs, mounts to a 3" wide trailer tongue and fits a 2" ball. It also has a trigger-style latch, zinc plating and is made in the USA.

Thanks for the photo. That is a great help for getting you the correct replacement. I recommend the Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes - Zinc Plated - 2" Ball - 7,000 lbs # DM72VR for a zinc plated option. This coupler does not have the reverse lockout, so you will need to add it using the Replacement Solenoid Valve for Titan Brake Actuators with Reverse Lockouts # T4748800 and the shield # T4835800183. • Adding Manual Lockout to Surge Brake Actuator
The reason there are different actuators for disc brakes and drum brakes is the psi the brakes operate at. Disc brakes operate at a higher psi than drum brakes and either too much or too little pressure can cause damage to the brakes. There are units that can have manual reverse lockouts installed but not all.

Thanks for the kind words, happy we were able to help, and the photos are also appreciated! As for the actuator, you are correct that the Atwood 85736 master cylinder is no longer available because Atwood was bought out so your best option is going to be a replacement actuator. I recommend the Demco Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuator - Drum Brakes # DM72VR which, like your Atwood, has a 7,000 lb capacity and accepts a 2" hitch ball. • Troubleshooting Surge Brake Boat Trailer that Makes Slamming Sound When Hitting Bumps
Is your trailer sitting as level as possible? Sounds like it could be sitting possibly nose high and combined maybe with a bit of play in the ball mount is creating the slamming you are experiencing. Thanks for all that detailed info, and Atwood is out of business which is why you can't find the exact replacement. We do have an option for you, that will bolt on, with the caveat being you will likely have to use shims. The reason for that is the only option to replace it is a bolt-on coupler meant for 3" wide channel tongues, so it won't be quite 3-1/2" wide. So what I recommend is one from Titan, which does have mounting holes 3" apart on center like yours, but you will also need to...

I checked with my tech contact over at Demco and he tells me that as long as you're able to find shims that will work, you can use the Demco # DM72VR on your trailer with 2-1/2" channel tongue.
