Tech Tip: If don't already have brakes that are free-backing, you'll need to get some. Otherwise, your brakes will keep locking up on you when you're backing up. And trust us on this one - upgrading now will be a lot less work than upgrading your wiring harness and a compatible actuator with an electric lockout.
Few things matter in towing as much as a secure connection to your hitch ball. Have you ever coupled your trailer, only to re-do the whole thing just convince yourself that you had a secure connection? Heck, maybe you even pushed on your truck a few times just to be certain.
The thing of it is, your basic coupler doesn't really have a mechanism to tell you that it has a firm grasp on the hitch ball. You either just have to eyeball it or try to wiggle the coupler latch until it closes. If there's a significant gap between your ball mount and your hitch ball - otherwise known as highballing - it can put your trailer at risk of becoming disconnected while towing.
To prevent this, the coupler portion of this trailer brake actuator has an automatic latching mechanism known as the EZ-Latch. To use it, you won't need to do anything different from what you're used to. As you lower the trailer onto the ball using your tongue jack, you'll see the latch rise. Then, just listen for it for the metalic clink . When you hear it, you'll know for certain that you've got a good, strong connection, allowing you to be on the road a little bit quicker and with a lot more confidence.
Unlike most couplers, which have a pin hole on the handle latch, the EZ-Latch coupler features a hole on the side of the coupler itself. Inserting a coupler lock through this hole will keep the latch from lifting, preventing disconnect and theft.
Chances are, you're replacing your actuator because your old one is rusted out. This one will too, but probably only the outside, and that won't be for a long time.
This Demco actuator features a durable zinc coating with a 120-hour salt spray rating that is designed to limit rust and corrosion. On the inside, the composite master cylinder is made of corrosion-resistant glass-reinforced nylon to further ensure durability and longevity.
When you're towing, the momentum of your rig pushes and pulls on your hitch ball as you slow to a stop. And with a surge brake actuator, that momentum uses the coupling point to push back on the inner portion of your surge brake actuator, which then compresses the master cylinder inside. As it contracts, it pressurizes your hydraulic brake lines, and ultimately engages your trailer brakes. When you start moving again, your tow vehicle pulls that inner portion back out, allowing the trailers wheels to start rolling again.
