This surge actuator handles braking automatically whenever your tow vehicle slows down. The inner slide pushes against the master cylinder to apply pressure through the brake lines, giving you smooth and consistent stopping power on trailers with hydraulic drum brakes. With a 7,000-lb gross towing weight capacity and 700-lb maximum tongue weight, it’s built to take on heavy loads without needing a separate brake controller.
Corrosion resistance is built right in. The heavy-duty zinc plating carries a 120-hour salt spray rating to help hold up against rust on boat or utility trailers that live outdoors. Inside, a glass-reinforced nylon master cylinder resists rust and pitting, while its large reservoir keeps plenty of brake fluid available. The automotive-style diaphragm cap seals out moisture and debris to keep your braking system cleaner over time.
Whether you’re replacing an older Atwood or Titan actuator or starting fresh, this model bolts onto a straight 3" wide trailer tongue with standard hardware. You can use two or three Grade-5 or Grade-8 bolts at 3" on-center spacing for a snug fit. The sturdy steel outer case keeps everything aligned for smooth operation, and large rear rollers let the inner slide move freely under load for reliable braking every trip.
A built-in breakaway system is already part of the assembly, providing one extra layer of protection if your trailer ever separates from the tow vehicle. The safety cable with snap hook attaches quickly and pulls the lever automatically to activate the brakes if needed—simple peace of mind built right into the actuator.

The hitch was good. The instructions weren't complete. There's no reference to how to release emergency lever. No hardware provided. For this price it should have. I used grade 8 bolt setup with washer, lock washer and lock nut. The install of brake valve was tricky. Overall time to change it was less than 20 minutes. Most of my time was spent installing brake line. For the trouble of an incomplete video demonstration, no hardware, and no clear instruction of emergency lever I'm giving it 3 stars. Overall the hitch worked and was a good upgrade.
Fit well and works great. Easy to bleed wheel cylinders with the emergency cable.
A real pain to bleed & the reservoir cap is very prone to cross threading.
Excellent but it should come with three new 1/2 x 4 1/2 bolts to mount it. I retrofitted electric to hydraulic so the original two shorter bolt were not useable.
I’ve owned this for 1 year now and have towed about 3,000mi at a 4K lb capacity - it works great and have had zero issues. Honestly this is the easiest hitching mechanism I’ve used, and there’s no need for a lock pin. Goes on smooth and releases easy every time. I highly encourage cutting off your old surge hitch and replacing it with this one, so much time saved with how easy it is. Even bleeding the brakes was a breeze by pulling the emergency lever by hand. Great product.
worked well and it made bleeding the brakes on the trailer easy. Physical appearance was right out of the showroom.
Although I have yet to take the boat and trailer out on the road, the actuator looks well made and fits perfectly. I had never before replaced brakes on a vehicle and would have appreciated some guidance, particularly in regard to bleeding the system but I managed.
Perfect replacement for the Atwood 85778 that is obsolete.

This hitch was easy to install on my 30 year old car hauler trailer - bolted onto the square tubing. It fixed my surge brakes. It works great. Good quality throughout.

you sipped it fast b ut it sat in Buffalo ny since sunday the it went too east syracuse ny back to buffalo ny allin one day both places 70 miles away Ups is lame.should hade you send the order to the store in Victor ny 10 miles awway I Would by now
Product seems to be fine but it sure would be helpful to have the bolts needed to attached to the trailer. I had hard time finding them. Our HD only had zinc and stainless.
I like the set-up; however it needs to have 3 mounting bolts instead of 2…that would keep the coupler straight instead of rotating up.
The right product for the right price. The installation video makes a simple job more complicated. Instead of two bolts very difficultly installed from the inside out, a single through bolt works fine.
Though I love the Demco hitch on my other boat trailer, this one was listed as a drop-in replacement for a Titan Hitch, and though the holes are 3" apart, they are cut about 1/4" too low. I will be reaching out to return this and exchange it for a Titan brand replacement.

This brake actuator was an easy replacement to my previous 1996 Tennessee boat Trailer actuator. I did have to get creative with the line plumbing do to the change in angle. Also needed to change the lock to a pin lock. I like the latching feature and overall quality. I would not hesitate to make this purchase again.

This was a great choice and perfoming well.
i bought this to replace a Dico actuator, had to cut the dico off, and drill holes for the new one. Worked out great.

Glad to hear the swap from the Dico actuator worked out well, even with having to cut the old one off and drill new holes. That’s never the most fun part of an install, but it sounds like you got everything lined up nicely in the end. How’s it been performing since the install? Any noticeable difference compared to the original Dico setup?

Installed, have not bled brakes yet but should work, Replaced my old welded on Attwood, lot of work removing the old set up. I think it will work perfect. Super fast shipping!

It's a lot of work to replace a welded-on actuator! You're new one looks great though!
Works a lot better than my original 2002 actuator. Boat actually slows down when I stop the truck. Easy to install. Blew the old fluid out of the lines with air compressor. Access to the piston made it easy to bled the lines.

The trailer slowing down when you want it to is definitely a nice thing to have happen, Steven! Demco makes some good stuff and this is one of my preferred actuators due to their EZ-Latch mechanism. It is so much easier to use than some of the other options out there. What kind of boat are you towing?
Excellent hitch my trailer actually stops now replaced my old atwood. You do have to drill a 3rd hold of replacing an older Atwood but it's not had. Bleeding brakes was also easy, Just pump the emergency pull line with vice grips and put a screwdriver underneath to lock the pressure on. Then run to each wheel (furthest first) crack the line until bubbles stop and boom your good.
