Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 01/16/2026

Question:

Are the keys with this lock a standard type key that can be duplicated by a locksmith if I should want extra copies? Thank you.

Hey, Frank!

That's a really good question. The Master Lock hitch lock part # 1479DAT uses a standard K1 key blank so would be really easy for a lock smith to make you some extra keys. It'll be easy to make extras for your family members or to just have a few extra keys on the key hook or glove compartment.

@MikeO Hey that's good to know that a place like ACE carries the right keys. More convenient.

I installed a receiver hitch on the front of my 330K mile 2000 Chevy Tahoe in order to install a 12,000-pound wench. Primarily for logging work. I live in fort Collins Colorado but leave the Tahoe in the mountains and not wanting to find the winch missing I needed a stout lock to secure it. I had to use two hitches in order to mount the winch way from the bumper and grill of my truck. the best locks (I needed a lock for each of the hitches) I could find and the Master Lock 1479DAT were the best. The keys are typical Master lock keys and since the keys worked only in a specific lock I had to scribe and upper and lower identifying mark on each. The only issue I had while using the locks was that the rubber cap covering the key holes was that they couldn't tolerate staying in place while driving 16 miles on a gravel road. I cut up a bicycle inner tube and made substantial rubber bands which kept the rubber caps in place. I could not be happier with these locks!

@DaveC What kind of logging do you do, selective, thinning, or something like shelterwood?
