Troubleshooting Cannot Torque 5/8" bolts to 200 ft-lbs on EcoHitch Hidden Front Mount Trailer Hitch

Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 01/10/2026

Question:

I cannot get the 5/8 nuts to torque to 200 ft lb like the instructions say so. The lock washers start to separate and smush out between the nut and washer. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Kris; the split lock washers on the # EH37FR will slightly flatten/deform and the gap will close. This is fine, just make sure you hit that torque rating for the 5/8" bolts and make sure the lock washers and flat washers are in the correct position. Also, make sure you're not doing this to the 1/2" bolts since they require significantly less torque.

Hey, Thanks for the quick response. The split washers squish almost all the way out…they are widening and if I keep torquing it down they will just pop out. Can I replace with nylock nuts? Grade 8? The 2 bolts that hold the tow hooks torqued down just fine. Was able to hit 200 ft lb.

@Kris I don't see a problem with that, the nylon lock nuts, but I would run it by EcoHitch and see what they say first.

@Kris It's normal for the lock washers to "flatten out" and the gap to disappear...especially at 200ft pounds!! It took me and a friend a bit of effot to get that torque! Hitch has been working great!

Hi Kris, my rv mechanic installed it so I can’t answer your question. Works great for my e-bikes though! Scott

This worked great on my RAM 2500. Easy install. I use it to install a bicycle hitch rack on the front when camping while pulling a trailer.

I had similar issues with the torque. I decided to install it all and take it to my mechanic to check it out with his tools. Working fine.
