Can I Use S Hook Ratchet Straps On RV Cargo Carrier To Secure Generator And Fire Wood?

Updated 12/17/2025 | Published 12/16/2025

Question:

Can I use the S-hook kit on my RV’s rear cargo tray to secure firewood and a small generator, or should I go with a heavier strap?

Angie, the S-hook ratchet strap kit # e92NR is perfect for firewood, coolers, smaller generators, and general camping gear. Each strap has a 700-lb working load limit, which is plenty for what you’re describing, and the S-hooks have keepers so they won’t bounce out of your cargo tray’s tie-down points on rough roads.

If you ever decide to carry something heavier like a full-size generator or a scooter, you might move up to the double-J kit # e42SV, but for camping essentials, the S-hook set is exactly what I’d use.

No matter which strap kit you go with, I highly recommend adding a cargo net like the Benton HotMesh # B32FR to hold your fire wood in place!

What kind of cargo tray do you have back there - platform style or basket style?

It’s a basket-style tray. Mostly firewood and a small Champion inverter generator. The net idea sounds smart.

@Angie Ok nice. Yes the S style straps # e92NR are perfect - those basket-style side rails give the S-hooks plenty to grab. And the cargo net really fills all the gaps when you’re hauling loose pieces of firewood. :)
