Will the Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 Flat Tow Brake System Work w/a 2018 Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited?

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 11/01/2025

Question:

Is it possible to install the Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 in a 2018 Jeep JK Wrangler Limited? If so, where can I find an installation guide for the 2018 Jeep that shows possible installation under the hood, considering the limited space for mounting the components? A video tailored to my specific tow vehicle would be highly beneficial.

Hey Danny, thanks for the picture! The Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 Flat Tow Brake System item # RVI94FR is compatible with your 2018 Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited. This system is brand new so we haven't had a chance to install it on a Jeep yet. I have linked the installation instructions below.

The components that mount underneath the hood are the Boost box which measures 6" long x 5-1/2" wide x 2-3/4" tall. and the Shadow 2 box which measures 4" long x 5-1/4" wide x 1-1/8" tall.

What kind of bumper does your JK Unlimited have? I would be happy to recommend the rest of the flat towing components you'll need if you could give me this information where it says Reply to Jerred H.

I watch a few videos online close to my model Jeep. The clearance between the fuse box is tight, but both the booster box and the shadow box might fit on the fuse cover. I already have the rest of my towing components installed and I am using a Blue Ox towing bar. I am considering purchasing a Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 Flat Tow Brake System - Wireless Monitor - Proportional - Fixed Part Number: RVI94FR. I am also interested in purchasing the Curt Tow Bar 7-Way to 6-Way Coiled Adapter Cord w/ 6-Way Socket - 7’ Long Part Number: C59HR to replace my existing cord and adapter. I am currently evaluating whether to purchase the Shadow2 model or the Portal model. I prefer the Shadow 2 model as it eliminates the need for connections each time I tow the jeep, which may be inconvenient for me at my age. Thank you.

@DannyL Yeah on top of the fuse box cover is typically where the control units are installed with other flat tow systems like the Demco's. It looks like we're already doing that with the Curt Shadow 2 item # RVI94FR. The Curt Tow Bar 7-Way to 6-Way Coiled Adapter Cord w/ 6-Way Socket - 7' Long item # C59HR is just going to be the cord and the 6-pin plug that installs on your Jeep. If you need the rest of the wiring, I recommend the Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles item # RM-15267, which also has all the diodes and wiring you'll need for your Jeep lights. I will say the Curt RVi Series 4 Portable Flat Tow Brake System item # RVI44FR is the quickest portable braking system to get set up. If you don't have space underneath the hood and want to have a system you can use on other vehicle's this is definitely the way to go. It weighs just under 10 lbs. If you go the portable route and don't have an accessory port/cigarette lighter you'll also need the 12 Volt Outlet Kit item # RM-9332.

@JerredH The height of the Boost box for the Curt RVi Series Shadow 2 Flat Tow Brake System is not specified. It would be beneficial to have this information so that I can determine if my hood would obstruct the booster box on the fuse box. If I could determine the maximum height I can achieve within the given dimensions, I could ensure that the clearance will be sufficient. Thanks

@DannyL Yeah, I wasn't able to find that online. I was going to pull one of the item # RVI94FR from the warehouse and measure the Boost and Shadow 2 boxes on Monday.
