Flat Tow Setup for 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland

Updated 06/20/2026 | Published 06/17/2026

Question:

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Looking at flat towing it, trying to figure out exactly what I need to order, just bought the car, don’t need the parts yet, but most likely next month or two after I pay off some bills. Is there a package deal for the tow bars, lighting, brake kit, etc, or is it all sold separately? And what do you recommend? Looked at the videos, also looked online at posts by others, always confusing, lots of people say blue ox, your site recommends demco. Looking forward to your response. Many Thanks Lucian

Hey Lucian! There are definitely a lot of options out there, and the best is usually a mix of parts from different manufacturers. We don't have a package under a single part number but I can give you a list of parts for a complete setup. I recommend the following:

-etrailer Invisible Base Plate Kit # e98950

-etrailer XHD Non-Binding Tow Bar # e94ZR (includes safety cables)

-etrailer Tow Bar Cover # e76FV (optional)

-Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-15267

-Curt RVibrake Shadow 2 Flat Tow Brake System # RVI94FR (includes charge line)

Our base plate kit and tow bar share the same design as the Demco, and typically save you a little money. The tow bar is nice since it has a built-in rise/drop so you can cut out the cost of an adapter to stay level. Roadmaster is the best when it comes to wiring, and the Shadow 2 is the best brake system on the market right now.

Where are you headed once you get everything installed on the Grand Cherokee?

Thanks for the speedy and thorough reply, will be ordering all of it very soon. I am going to watch the installation videos first so I know what to expect and be well prepared. One question, is there a plug and play option on the brake lights so I don’t have to splice them in? Thanks, Lucian

@LucianM they might but we don't carry it. They always have a 4-way on them so you would need to cut off the connector and wire a 6-way on the end for your charge line. Those seem convenient, but they aren't the most reliable. The splicing isn't as bad as it sounds, and the Roadmaster wiring is definitely the best option.
