Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for a 7,500 lbs Trailer

Updated 10/13/2025 | Published 10/09/2025

Question:

Hi, Im considering purchasing a WD hitch for my 2017 GMC Canyon 4x4 All Terrain 2.8 Duramax for towing my 2016 MMDI 6x10 dump trailerformer a HomeDepot rental. The tongue weight for my 2700 lb trailer is 460 lbs empty. The reason for the high tonque weight is the combination of hydraulic surge brake provisions, since converted to electric brakes, the large deep cycle Marine AGM battery, and hydraulics for the sissor hoist. The gross weight of my tandem axle trailer is listed at 7500 lbs, and max towing capacity for my truck is 7600 lbs. Weights for my truck without the trailer are the following: truck 5780 lbs, which includes me and full tank of fuel and stuff stored in bed, steer axle 2860 lbs, and drive axle 2860 lbs. With the trailer attached and empty, and 1/4 tank of fuel, steer axle is 2720 lbs, drive axle 3420 lbs, and trailer weight is 2260 lbs. As explained, the drive axle is disproportinaly carrying a lot of weight max for it is 3500 lbs, and 3400 lbs for the steer axle. The distance from the center of the hitch ball to the 6 inch thick trailer frame for attaching tension bar brackets is 30 inches. The WD hitch system that may work best for my needs might be Curts C17499. Are there other WD hitchs to consider? Thanks in advance for your time and expertise!

Hey Lawrence, thanks for the information. For your 7,500 lbs trailer, I recommend the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control item # EQ37100ET. This system works with tongue weights between 600 lbs - 1,000 lbs so it's going to accommodate all that extra weight you have on the front and the standard load from whatever you're hauling.

The brackets on the Equal-i-zer item # EQ37100ET can mount from 27" - 32" back from the center of coupler so you'll have no issues there. They also work with trailer frames up to 6" tall. This system includes a 2" shank and a 2-5/16" hitch ball.

In addition to helping with sag and transferring weight forward on your Colorado, the Equal-i-zer item # EQ37100ET has 4 point sway control. This will keep your trailer in line behind your Colorado when you're going down the highway and make a sudden move or get passed by a semi.

Curt makes a ton of great products but their weight distribution systems, like the Curt TruTrack item # C17499 are mid at best. The bars are smaller so they just don't perform as well as other systems.

What size coupler does your dump trailer have?

@LawrenceC You're welcome! Awesome! The Equal-i-zer item # EQ37100ET is exactly what you'll need then. If you do not already have one it is recommend to use the 1-7/8" 12pt Shallow Socket - 3/4" Drive item # ALL643216 to get the hitch ball installed.

@JerredH I ordered the WD hitch the other day, along with the recommend thin walled socket. The outstanding question I have is adjusting the hitch once for the varying payloads I haul. My thought, which could be wrong, is to over adjust a bit by distributing more weight to the steer and trailer axles. I believe this will be okay due to the 550 lbs of stuff I have stored in the bed, which adds more weight to the drive axle; this added weight will keep the drive axle from becoming too light.

@Lawrence Awesome! You're going to need to adjust the position of the brackets on the tongue. Sliding them forwards and backwards will help with how the weight is transferred. You can also adjust the spacers in the hitch head as well. There's quite a bit of measurements and options in the installation instructions that will walk you through the entire process.
