If you're looking for an American-made hitch that rides quietly, offers a quick and easy setup, and provides you with supreme handling, the Blue Ox SwayPro might be just what you're after. When we tested this system, the truck and trailer felt like one unit, and noise wasn't an issue at all. Overall, the SwayPro came out on top and proved to be one of our favorite weight distribution systems.

Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Blue Ox SwayPro Offers Superior Sway Control

Blue Ox SwayPro Positive Caster

The SwayPro is designed to keep your trailer centered behind your vehicle as you tow, no matter what crosswinds or obstacles try to get in your way. To do this, the head on the system is built with a positive caster angle. You might've heard of caster in reference to your car; it's the same technology that vehicles use to stay centered on the road. When you turn a corner in your car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically returns to center. This is caster taking over. Well, the SwayPro functions much the same way. The positive caster angle that's built into this hitch works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The trunnions inside the head assembly hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly hold your trailer in line.

A close-up shot of the Blue Ox SwayPro's bracket shows the chain rotated and pulled taught with very few chain links exposed

At the other end of this weight distribution system, you'll find 2 more points of built-in sway control. Blue Ox's rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible, with the majority of the chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. This means that each chain is held more stable than they are in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed.

This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from swaying - all without the creaking, grinding, and popping noises you get with friction-style sway control setups. Moreover, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage anything.

The Blue Ox SwayPro's No-Hassle Setup

When it's time to install the system for the first time, you might be surprised at how easy it is to do. All in all, you can probably have it done within an hour - 2 at the most.

First, the head. With just the right amount of adjustment angle already preset, it's ready to go right out of the box! No need to fine-tune it with hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew! The only thing you'll need to adjust is the height of the head on the shank. After that, to get the trunnion bars installed, just insert them into the sockets, and lock them in place with the included pins and clips.

Quick Tip: If you upgrade to a new trailer in the future, and you end up needing a system for a different tongue weight, you can just swap out the SwayPro's spring bars without having to buy a whole new hitch.

To get the Blue Ox SwayPro ready to go, just insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Other weight distribution systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. To get the SwayPro ready to go, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for a 2014 Airstream International
In order to choose the correct weight distribution system for your 2014 Airstream International and your 2016 Ford F-250 we will need to find your total tongue weight (TTW). Total tongue weight is calculated by adding the loaded ready to tow tongue weight of the trailer to any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. As long as your total tongue weight does not exceed 1,000 lbs then I recommend using the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control part # BXW1006....

  • Weight Distribution w/Sway Control Recommendation for 28ft Airstream Towed by Lifted F-250
First thing we need to do is pick out the correct rated weight distribution system for your 28 foot Airstream. I looked up specs on what you have and the total weight could be 7,600 lbs so you'd most likely have a tongue weight range of around 700-1,000 lbs which the Blue Ox SwayPro part # BXW1000 you mentioned would work well with most likely but it would not be my first choice. Instead I'd recommend the Strait Line kit part # RP66074 which has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs...

Hey Joseph, It really is going to depend on how much tongue weight your trailer has. Have you had the tongue actually measured while it's fully loaded? If it was already installed did you already travel a bit with it? Was the ride super stiff or still comfortable for you?

  • Chain Link Setting on Blue Ox SwayPro
Hello Ernesto; are you talking about the Blue Ox SwayPro like # BXW1000? If so, I would move it to the 9th link. The chain can be adjusted, it doesn't have to stay set on the 7th. The instructions actually say to insert the 9th chain link from the top (opposite the u-bolt) into the slot of the latch. They also state you can advance it to the 10th or 11th link to compensate for changes. I attached a picture with the instructions and linked the full installation instructions further down...

When continuing to experience sway while using the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control - Clamp On - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW # BXW1000, I recommend making adjustments. I don't recommend starting with making changes to your tongue weight, but rather adjusting the number of links. The exterior length of your Sonic Venture SN231VRK is 26-1/2 feet which is just over the length where a second friction sway control system is recommended of 26 feet. So your best option would be to install a second # 83660. Typically, to add a second sway-control bracket to their WD hitch, the Draw-Tite Sway Control Tab, part # 3442 is welded on to the head of the system, giving an additional mount for the sway control ball. • Proper Adjustment of a Blue Ox Weight Distribution System
Ideally there should be 5 chain links on your Blue Ox weight distribution hitch between the spring bars' ends and the top of the rotating lift brackets. If there are fewer than 5 links you can try adjusting the hitch head back (toward the trailer and away from the tow vehicle) until you have 5 links between them. If this cannot be done you should consider re-installing the system from scratch; the installation instructions are linked for you. For the system to work as intended the angle...
