Can I Change out My 4.8-8 Tire and Wheel with 5 on 4 1/2" Bolt Pattern for a 215/60-8 Bias?

Question:

I currently have a boat trailer with 4.8-8, 4.5on 5 lug rim. Will the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8 White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D work on my trailer?

Hello David,

The Kenda 215/60-8 tire on the 8" white wheel # AM3H323 will bolt right up to your trailer since it has the same 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern as your current 4.80-8 setup.

The main differences come down to size: the new tire is about 2 inches taller overall and quite a bit wider, roughly 8.5" compared to your current 4.7". That means your trailer will sit just over an inch higher, and you’ll need to make sure you’ve got enough clearance above the tire for the suspension to move, plus about 2 inches of extra room on the inside and outside for width.

The good news is, this Kenda tire also carries a much higher load capacity, so it’s definitely a sturdier option. As long as you’ve got the clearance near your fenders, frame, and springs, it should be a solid upgrade. Just be sure to swap both tires on the axle so they match, and give your lug nuts a re-torque after a short break-in drive.

If you do not have that kind on clearance, let me know how much extra room you have so we can explore other options.

What kind of trailer is this going on?

Hey David, did you find that the Kenda tire worked well with your trailer, or did you need to explore other options due to clearance issues? I'm curious to know how it turned out, as it could help others considering a similar upgrade.
