Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Can Small Enough Wheels and Tires Be Put on a Trailer to Lower it 5 Inches to Fit in Garage
The 205/75-14 tire size has an overall height of 26.3 inches. In order to drop down 5 inches the overall height of the smaller tire would have to be 10 inches or more less or 16.3 inches. The only tires that small are 4.80/4.00-8 at 16.1 inches tall. This size is rated much too low, 760 pounds at most. It might be less of a hassle to remove the AC unit from the top, especially if you will be storing the trailer in the garage for extended periods of time. Or, you could always get a cover...

  • Recommended 215/60-8 Trailer Tire w/ a Galvanized Wheel for a Jet Ski Trailer
Sorry we are not going to have a wheel spacer for a 4 on 4 lug wheel. Since you're replacing tires on a jet ski trailer, I recommend the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel item # AM3H325. This is the same size wheel and tire combo you were looking at item # AM3H323 but with a galvanized wheel that will stand up better over the years being in and out of the water. Sorry, but it also has a 0 offset so it won't address your clearance issue either.

  • Availability of 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 Tires With Heavier Ply Rating
Hi Stacy; 18.5 x 8.5 - 8 is an older tire size so the modern equivalent is 215/60-8. Load Range D (8 ply) is going to be the highest so you can use the # AM3H323 with a white wheel or # AM3H325 which is galvanized. Both have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. What kind of trailer do you have?

  • What is Smallest Trailer Wheel and Tire that is a Radial for Snowmobile Trailer
Hey Craig, yes the Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel # AM3H325 would be the best wheel and tire in the size you have currently of 215/60-8. It has the highest Load Range and also a galvanized wheel that will work great to prevent corrosion. To end up with a radial you'd need to go to the larger tire size of ST145/R12 like the part # AM31202. This would raise the height of the trailer about 1.5 inches which I know snowmobile trailers like to be as low as possible.

  • What Is The Date Code On Tires Sold By etrailer?
Hey Wanye. We cannot guarantee a specific date code for the tires we offer. We usually move tires pretty quickly. Generally when we ship tires like the item # AM3H325, you were looking at, they have been manufactured within the last year. Our warehouse is climate controlled, and according to tire manufacturers, tires do not age in proper storage. The warranty date would begin when you receive them. I just checked the order history for the Kenda item # AM3H325. We sold 50 of these tires...

  • Are All 8 inch Trailer Tires Bias Ply or are Some Radial
Hey Russel, we actually have more radial tires than we do bias ply overall. But in the size of 215/60-8 like the wheel and tire you referenced we only have bias ply options. Actually everything that is on an 8 inch wheel is a bias ply.

  • Can I Upgrade to a Load Range D Tire Size 165/65-8
I may have a potential solution for you, but the tire size 165/65-8 is only available in load range C. To step up in load range, you will have to switch to tire size 215/60-8 Tire and Wheel # AM3H325 or 5.70-8 # AM30155 which are both slightly larger in diameter by about 1-1/2 inch and the 215/60-8 tire # AM3H325 is about 2 inches wider while the 5.70-8 tire # AM30155 is about 1/2 inch narrower. With the size difference, you will just need to make sure you have the clearance available...

The supplied wheels are 14-inch and are fitted with an ST205/75D14-inch tire, which is a load range D tire. The wheel/tire you referenced, part # AM3H325, uses this same 5-on-4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. • Replacement Tire for a 18.5-8.5-8 Tire
Based on the tire info sticker that you attached it looks like you are looking for a replacement tire for your 18.5-8.5-8 tire size. The 18.5-8.5-8 tire has an overall diameter of 18.5 inches, an overall width of 8.5 inches and fits an 8 inch diameter wheel. The closest size tire I would have is the 215/60-8 bias tire. • Recommended Tires And Wheels To Replace 18.5/8.5-8 Tires On Triton Trailer
The tire size you can use as a replacement for your triton trailer is a 215/60-8. If you want just the tire, I recommend part # AM1HP28 which is a Load Range D tire. This 8-ply tire has a load capacity of 1,165 lbs at 70 psi. For a Load Range C tire only I recommend part # AM1HP26. This is a 6-ply tire and has a maximum load rating of 935 lbs at 50 psi. Both of these tires are bias-ply tires and will work on the rims you have for your tires. If you are looking for a wheel/tire combo...

  • What is the Actual Load Capacity of Kenda 215/60-8 Trailer Tire/8-Inch Wheel # AM3H325
Thank you for the photo of your utility trailer. You are correct that if a tire itself and a wheel itself each carry different load ratings the combined wheel-with-tire will have a rating equal to the lower-rated of the two parts. As it happens in the case of the Kenda 215/60-8 Trailer Tire/8-Inch Wheel # AM3H325, both the tire and the wheel share a common maximum load rating of 1165-lbs, so this is the load rating of the combination, part # AM3H325. • Difference Between Tire Sizes 5.70-8 and 215/60-8
5.40-8 is not a standard trailer tire size but 5.70-8 is and I imagine that's what you mean to type since the 4 and 7 are close on the keyboard. The tire will be right at 3-1/2 inches wider and the overall diameter will be only .2 of an inch larger. You would need a different wheel too though since the two tire sizes won't fit the same rim. For that you would want the # AM3H325 for if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern or part # AM3H300 for if you need a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern.

The original tire that you have like the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM30060 is about 16.1" Tall and 4.6" wide. The first notable step up would be a Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM3H325 which is about 18.3" Tall and 8.9" Wide. This tire has a capacity of 1,165 lbs per tire whereas the Load Range C has a capacity of 940 lbs. You'd have to check out the weight of your trailer as it would be when loaded to determine if you'd need the additional capacity.
