Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

Wheel/tire are good quality. Wheel was stamped with a manufacturing date of last month, so they weren't sitting in a warehouse for years waiting to be sold. I'll be buying these again. This wheel/tire combo was cheaper than buying just the tires from a local tire shop.

  • What is the Difference Between 4.80/4.00-8 and 5.70-8 Trailer Tires for a Boat Trailer
Both the 4.80/4.00-8 and 5.70-8 tires sizes will fit the same wheel size, 8 x 3-3/4 inch. The 5.70 is taller by 2 inches and wider by 1.2 inches. If you have more than 1 inch of space between the tire and a fender and more than 1.2 inches between the side of the tire and the trailer then you can use the larger size such as # AM10010 rated for 715 pounds at 50 psi. If you do not have the space then stick with the same size you have, 4.80/4.00-8 using # AM10002 rated for 590 pounds at 60...

  • Solution For Needing Higher Speed Rated Trailer Tire Size 5.30-12
We have trailer tires in the size of 5.30-12 that have a higher speed rating like the part # TT53012C but we do not have them mounted on a wheel. This tire is rated for 81 mph. So you could go with the tire and have them mounted on your current wheels or go with new wheels too and have them mounted locally like with # AM20153.

  • Can Adding Larger Tires to a Trailer Increase Its Capacity
I am glad you asked these questions. First, to tow a trailer level you need only a ball mount with the proper rise or drop. I have included a link to our FAQ article that explains how to measure for rise/drop and a link to our ball mount main page. For the tires, going to a higher capacity tire does not increase the capacity of the trailer itself. The trailer capacity is set by the axle capacity. There should be a plate or sticker on the trailer tongue or frame somewhere that lists the...

  • What Air Pressure Should I Run in My Trailer Tires?
We recommend that all trailer tires be inflated to the max psi stated on the sidewall of the tire. If the tire is under inflated, the weight capacity is lowered to an unknown amount for that tire. Although running lower air pressures can improve the ride of the trailer with lighter loads, the weight rating that the tire can carry will be reduced. If a heavier load is put on the trailer without changing the air pressure to the recommended amount, the sidewall of the tire could heat up and...

  • Should Trailer Axle be Changed from a Normal Axle to a Torsion Axle on Home Made Tear Drop Trailer
You can go to a torsion axle and different tires and wheels if you so choose. You have to consider what you are trying to accomplish by doing so to determine if it is worth the expense or not. Normally I would say you could change to a different tire size if there is clearance to do so but Harbor Freight trailers tend to have odd bearings and if changing the hubs is required to go to a larger size tire and wheel you may not be able to without changing the axle any way. If you do change...

  • What PSI Should I Fill My Trailer Tires To?
Hi Leo! This is a question that comes up every now and again and there are a lot of differing opinions out there in the ether. What we always stick with is what we have been told by all the tire manufacturers, as they will know best. If your tire is rated to 80 psi, that is what you will want it filled to (when cold). The only exception to this rule is Goodyear. They have a chart that lays out what the capacity will be at a specific psi, but again, they are the only ones that do this....

I appreciate your confidence but I am going to need a bit more information to answer your question accurately. What kind of tire do you have? What size is it? Whatever those tires say as far as PSI goes is what you will want to do. There is only one brand of tire, Goodyear, that has approved PSI levels as far as weight goes. Every other tire has a recommended PSI, which you will want to follow. It looks like your trailer tops out at 10,000 lbs capacity depending on the model year. Do...

The 4.80/4.00-8 tires # AM30020 are 4.6 inches wide with the outer diameter (when inflated) being 16.1 inches. They have a load capacity of 590 lbs at 60 psi. If you move to the larger tire # AM30140 you will have a tire width of 5.9 inches and an outer diameter of 18 inches. This gives you a little over 1 inch more tread on each tire and also gives you almost 1 inch more ground clearance. It will increase your load capacity to 910 lbs at 75 psi. These tires will wear a little better...

First, I do recommend verifying exactly how much clearance you have. The Kenda 4.80-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30670 you are looking at is 20.7" tall while your Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30020 is 16.1" tall. Eight inch trailer tires max out at 65 miles per hour. They are so small that at speeds above that they would have so many revolutions that they would get excessively hot and fail.
