Updated 08/28/2025 | Published 08/18/2025

Question:

Hi there, I’m looking to replace the rims / tires on my 1967 airstream caravel. I am also looking to add baby moon hubcaps to them. They have a 5 bolt attachment.

Cool camper Mitchell! Are you doing a full restore job or just getting some new wheels for it?

Anyway, we do have some wheel options that can take Baby Moon Hub Caps # AM90086 and I have them listed below:

Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset - 15" x 6" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Black # AM20504
Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset - 14" x 5-1/2" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Black # AM20304
Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset - 14" x 5-1/2" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Blue # DEX39FR
Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset - 13" x 4-1/2" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Black # AM20214
Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset - 13" x 4-1/2" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - White # AM20212

These all have a +0.5" offset and a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern (I included a picture that can be used to verify that pattern). Not sure how the blue or white options would look on your Airstream, but figured I would include them for you to check out.

Thank you for providing these options! I am doing a partial restoration, the airstream is in decent shape. These options are more confusing then i thought! Im guessing the offset is so that the tire isnt rubbing up against the suspension? I tried adding on a rim I had here at home and the tire was rubbing up against the shock/suspension. The current size tires i have on are 205 75 r15. I just measured the distance per bolt and it is 2-5/8”. I’d like a black rim with baby moon hubcap.

@MitchellB The +.5 offset all the wheels I mentioned above actually move the the tire closer to the frame. A negative offset would move the tire/wheel out from the frame. And yes, that does sound very counter intuitive. The 205/75R15 means you have a 15" rim and our only 15" rim that will accept a Baby Moon is the Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset - 15" x 6" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Black # AM20504. Is that 205/75R15 that you currently have fitting the space? Or is that the one that you tried and contacted the suspension? Also, would you be open to something fancier that doesn't have an offset? I think the Aluminum Sendel Mod Trailer Wheel - 15" x 6" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM22627 looks pretty cool on just about everything.

@LazerS Yes the 205/75R15 is what is on there now and that is working for me. However the rims don’t take hubcaps. Do those numbers tell you the spacing/offset? I would rather have the black rim that fits a hubcap for a classic look over the aluminum rim. The rim/tire I tried is from my 1974 Volkswagen Bus. Not intended for trailers, but I just wanted to see it’s fit as I have hubcaps for them. Not going with this option.

@Mitchell Cool bus! The stock wheels on those have a 39mm positive offset (I looked it up), so that's why they contacted the suspension. The Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset - 15" x 6" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Black # AM20504 only has a .5" positive offset. I don't think this will have any issues at all fitting your Airstream. I don't have any pictures of this wheel on an Airstream, but it is the one we sell to a lot of people restoring vintage trailers. I have yet to have one come back for not fitting. I think it will work perfectly for you. : )
