Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • What is the Difference Between Trailer Wheels and Vehicle Wheels
The differences from trailer wheels, like the Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset # AM20504 that you referenced, and vehicle wheels, like GM OEM wheels, can vary based on a lot of things. Trailer wheels are specifically designed to be used with trailer tires. Trailer tires have sidewalls that are more stiff so that they can better handle the vertical load while vehicle tires have more flex in the sidewall to help make the ride more smooth for passengers and accommodate the movement...

  • Will the Baby Moon Center Cap Fit a 15 Inch Wheel on a 1938 Chevy Master Deluxe
You should not have a problem using the Americana Baby Moon Trailer Wheel Center Cap, # AM90086, with the 15 inch wheels on your 1938 Chevy Master Deluxe as long as the wheels you are using are the standard steel car wheels. This cap is designed to fit 13 to 15 inch conventional steel wheels with a 5-lug pattern. There should be a ring that sticks out surrounding the bolt holes. This cap will snap around the outer edge of that ring. I have attached a photo showing the ring I am talking...

  • Recommended Wheels And Tires For A Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension
The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System w Electric Brake Hubs # A35RD545E require a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and a minimum 14" wheel so the Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset # AM20504 will be a compatible fit. This Wheel does have a 1/2" offset that will have it sit closer towards the frame of the trailer so you could potentially have the clearance issues with the frame or body of the trailer. The # AM20504 can fit the following tire sizes: 205/75-15 225/75-15 235/75-15...

  • Will Americana Baby Moon Trailer Wheel Center Cap Part # AM90086 Fit 15-Inch Rims on VW Trike
The Americana Baby Moon Trailer Wheel Center Cap, part # AM90086, is intended for 13-, 14- and 15-inch conventional 5-lug trailer wheels. Since your VW Trike wheels are 15 inches and have roughly a 9-1/2 inch snap ring around the hub, these 9-1/2-inch center caps may work. I have provided a link to one of the 15-inch wheels we offer that this center cap fits. I have also included a photo of the wheel with measurements that I took from a sample in our warehouse. • Availability of 15-Inch Wheels With 5-on-4-1/2-Inch Bolt Pattern
The wheel you referenced, Dexstar 15 x 6-inch wheel # AM20504, features the 5-on-4-1/2-inch bolt pattern. These wheels also feature 3 projections around the hub area to allow a friction-fit of a hub cap like the 9-1/2-inch Americana Baby Moon # AM90086 for example. Since these wheels are not designed for use with any specific hub cap the fit of this particular Americana part, or your original hub caps, cannot be absolutely assured. I did go to our warehouse to measure the circle surrounding...

The baby moon hubcaps we offer will work with either 5 lug conventional wheels like part # 6 lug wheels # AM20504 part # PX1307SS, 8 lug wheels part # PX1309SS and 10 lug wheels # PXQ1402B.

  • Can I Use Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset on My 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport?
Hello Bruce, The wheels that we carry are not meant for vehicle use, they are only intended for trailer use. Trailer wheels aren’t made for cars because they’re designed for straight-line loads, not the side forces of turning. They have different bolt patterns, offsets, and weaker lateral support. Trailer tires also have stiff sidewalls for carrying weight but don’t grip like car tires. Plus, they lack proper cooling for brakes, which can be unsafe. Using them on a car could cause handling...

  • The Max PSI for Trailer Wheels Versus Tire Max PSI
The max psi rating is specific to each tire as it is tested, so you cannot simply increase tire pressure to get a higher speed rating or increase weight capacity. Your tires could overheat or wear quickly because they are not designed for that pressure rating. Overheating is the number one cause of tire failure including blow outs and it is almost always due to improper inflation or traveling over the speed rating of the tire. • Need 15 Inch Rim With Positive Offset to Decrease Trailer Width
You'd need to find a wheel with a positive offset, which would move the tire closer to the trailer. If your trailer has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern (see linked FAQ article) we offer a conventional wheel with a positive 1/2 inch offset, part # AM20504. This wheel would decrease the width of your trailer by 1 inch. I might be able to find a wheel with a slightly larger offset, but I'd need to know your wheel bolt pattern. • 15" Trailer Wheels with 5 on 4.5 Bolt Pattern and +Offset
I'll start off by saying that when it comes to wheels that are rated for the weight of your trailer and are 15" wheels with a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern, we have a very limited selection of wheels that have a +0.5 offset (which is the largest offset we offer). The Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel # AM20504 have a +0.5 offset on 15" wheels with a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern, as well as a 1820-lbs capacity which makes them a great fit for your trailer. I've gone ahead and linked all of the trailer...

  • Does Center Bore of Trailer Wheel Matter When Picking Out Replacement
The pilot diameter of a wheel is only crucial for if the wheel is hub-centric (meaning it centers to the hub using the pilot hole of the wheel), and not lug centric (means the lugs are what centers the wheel). The # AM20504 has a pilot diameter of 2.62 inches. Most likely you have lug centric wheels and this would be just fine. The easy way to tell is to check out how the wheel attaches to the hub. If it is a wheel bolt it is hub centric, or if it is a lug nut it is lug centric. If you...

  • Upgrading from a 14 inch Trailer Wheel to a 15 inch Trailer Wheel
So you have 14 inch rim that has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern and are looking to go to a 15 inch rim. For that you would want the part # AM32424 as it has a ST205/75R15 tire mounted to it which has a 1,820 lbs at 50 psi capacity. The dimensions of this are 8.1 inches in width and 27.3 inches in diameter. You will need to compare that to your trailer to determine if it would fit. I attached a review video for this wheel/tire for you to check out as well.

  • What is Wheel Offset on Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel with Offset, Part # AM20504
Your understanding of the wheel offset is correct. With a positive 0.5 inch offset the wheel moves toward the trailer 1/2 inch, resulting in 2 inches of the wheel in front of the hub and 3 inches of the wheel behind the hub. (Negative offset would have the opposite result, moving the wheel outward away from the trailer.) I have included a photo of the wheel indicating this graphically. Yes, a 205/75/R15 radial automobile tire will fit this wheel, but this item is designed for use on a...
