Can an Extender be Used with the Roadmaster High-Low Adapter for Bike Rack Clearance?

Updated 08/21/2025 | Published 08/15/2025

Question:

Hello. We are currently using a Roadmaster High-Low Adapter for Tow Bar 2 Hitches - 6” Rise/ - 10K GTW. We place our bike rack in between our motorhome and toad. We bought a new ford Bronco toad and now upon a sharp turn the bike rick just touched the front of the toad. Do you know if I can add a Roadmaster extension on the existing hitch adapter. Thank you

That's definitely not a good situation.

If you raise the bike rack up a bit will that give you the clearance you're needing? Adding another extender to your Roadmaster Adapter # RM-048-6 is never a good idea because it adds more potential fail points and pretty much every adapter manufacturer states not to use more than one adapter either.

What I like to recommend to people is the Replacement Shank for Gen-Y Adjustable Ball Mount # 325-GH-304. If you flip it upside down you can use the straight receiver for the tow bar, and then the uppermost receiver for your bike rack.

Does the Gen-Y shank seem like it will help with your situation?

Thanks Jon Would I be able to use any of the Gen-Y parts. Like the 5 or 6 hole types? As I’m not sure if it will still clear the Ford Bronco. Is it returnable? Thanks

@CraigD You could use a 5-Hole # 325-GH-305 or 6-Hole # 325-GH-306 shank, yes. You can return it unused, so before ordering I recommend trying to recreate the same angle that made the bike contact your Bronco and seeing if having the bike rack at a different height would help, if that makes sense.
