Can Air Over Hydraulic Actuator of Trailer be Replaced with EOH

Updated 08/12/2025 | Published 08/08/2025

Question:

Hello, I just recently purchased a 2006 Renegade Stacker gooseneck race trailers and wanted to know if the electric over hydraulic unit would work on this trailer. it is a 46 ft, air over hydraulic brakes, air ride suspension, I am looking to covert the drum hydraulic braking system from Air over hydraulic to Electric over hydraulic as my truck does not have air brakes on my freightliner sport chassis. look forward to your reply and if you need specific pictures I can take them. Thank you Paul

Hey Paul, yes you can replace the air over hydraulic actuator with an electric over hydraulic actuator like the Dexter DX part # K71-650. It would connect to the brake lines just like your current actuator but instead of air pressure the voltage from an electric brake controller would control the pressure. What type of trailer wiring connector does your trailer have and does your tow vehicle have a brake controller?

Hello Jameson, It has the standard 7 pin that comes on all pick up trucks. I just found out the trailer has 10k axles X 3 so is the same controller good or will it have to have a larger one with more pressure? Thank you for the reply

@PaulO That actuator will work fine on a triple axle trailer. For what its worth it's not so much the pressure that is needed for more axles its the volume of that pressure.
