Flat Tow Set-Up for 2025 Ford Maverick Hybrid AWD Pulling Behind Class C with Hydraulic Brakes

Updated 06/17/2025 | Published 06/11/2025

Question:

I am purchasing a 2025 Ford Maverick Hybrid AWD. Ford has now approved the AWD Hybrid for flat towing. I intend to install a Roadmaster Baseplate and use the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain Towbar. However, I am not sure what braking system to use. I live in Colorado and anticipate Mountain Driving with steep grades. My current motorhome is a class C with hydraulic brakes only. What system do you recommend for a Hybrid with active braking in this situation?

Hello Wayne,

Congrats on the new 2025 Maverick! Do you have a new favorite feature?

Since your Class C has hydraulic brakes you will want the Demco Stay-IN-Play Duo Braking System for RVs w/ Hydraulic Brakes - Wireless Monitor - Proportional # DM86VR. This system is our installers favorite to install, and it works in sync with your coaches brakes which is important on those steep inclines! I attached an install video for you to check out that we did here on a 2025 Ford Maverick.

This is how I would complete the rest of the flat tow:

- Base Plate: Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # RM87NQ

- Tow Bar: Roadmaster Nighthawk All-Terrain Tow Bar w/ LED Lights - Non-Binding - RV Mount - 8,000 lbs # RM-676

- Protection from road debris: Roadmaster Tow Defender Protective Screen for Towed Vehicles # RM-4750

- Wiring: Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles - 7-Way to 6-Way Coiled Adapter Cord # RM-15267 (confirmed with Roadmaster, currently getting our fitguide updated)

- Charge Line: Roadmaster Battery Charge Line Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-156-25

- Brake Light Switch: Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit # RM87GR *You will need to install this if the brake lights do not work with the towed vehicle's ignition key turned to the "tow" position as you will need this to be able to install the braking system.

I attached some review/install videos for you to check out. I also attached a great article we have on the must have components for flat towing. It is a great read whether you are a seasoned flat tower, or new to the flat tow world.

Do you have your first trip planned for when you get the Maverick all set-up? If so, where is your first adventure going to be?

Thank you Kate for the very thorough answer. I will study it and reply on the page if I have any questions. I will be doing all of the installation myself, so the videos will really help. I’ve done some basic installs on my RV, but never anything as daunting as the baseplate which involves some trim work - don’t want to screw that up. Again, thanks and I will ask questions on the website. Regards,

Curious as to why you would select the Nighthawk All-Terrain Towbar vs the Falcon All-Terrain Towbar. Seems like overkill with the Maverick being about 3700 lbs. Are there particular features with the Nighthawk that aren’t on the Falcon that make it worth the extra cost?

@WayneS A lot of people like the visibility of the Nighthawk, didn't even mean to put them in there honestly. The Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar # RM-520 that are rated for the 6K are more than enough. Just don't forget some safety cables since the Falcon does not come with them included, Roadmaster 64" Single Hook, Straight Safety Cables - 8,000 lbs # RM-645.
