Disc Brake Set-Up for 2018 Pratt Deck Trailer With Tandem 7,000 Pound Axles, 5/8" Studs

Question:

Hi, I am looking at replacing the drum surge breaks on my 2018 Pratt deck trailer. The trailer has 7000lb axles with 8x6.5 drums with 5/8 wheel studs. I put together the following components from your site: 1 HS381-8067 Hydrastar Actuator 2 KOD63FR Kodiak 13 Hub/Rotor 1 18TA-BLKIT Kodiak Brake Line Kit Can you comment on if this is a good setup? Also I need to add an electronic breakaway kit. Is there a complete tandem kit for this setup? I saw some complete kits by none for the 5/8 studs. Thanks for your help!

Hello Bob,

I’m sorry, but we do not offer kits with 5/8" studs.

That said, the Hydrastar actuator paired with the Kodiak brakes is a great setup! The only thing I would recommend changing is the brake lines, here’s the combination I would suggest:

Hydrastar Marine Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi – # HS381-8067

(2) Kodiak Disc Brakes - 13" Hub/Rotor - 8 on 6-1/2 - Dacromet - 7,000 lbs - E-Z Lube – # KOD63FR

Hydrastar Hydraulic Brake Line Kit - Tandem Axle - 25' Long, 3/16" Main Line – # HS496-252

Bright Way Push-to-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit with 1-Amp Charger and 5 Ah Battery - Top Load – # 3802308

Making the switch from surge brakes is always an excellent upgrade, you'll really notice the difference!

Hey Bob, did you find a solution for your trailer's brake setup with the suggested components? I'm asking because your experience could help others looking to upgrade their trailer brakes.
