Identifying Base Plate on Jeep Wrangler With Factory Steel Bumper

Updated 04/29/2025 | Published 04/23/2025

Question:

We are purchasing a 2024 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with the factory steel bumper. I have been looking at the flat tow adapters and I ran across this image while researching brake light kits I am trying to figure out what tow adapter they are using on this factory steel bumper. Do you have any knowledge of this?

Hey Matthew! That is the HK Offroad Shackle Tab Kit. Looking at their site they list them as 3/4" thick so you would need the Adapter for Jeep D-Ring Bumper Mounts to Roadmaster Motor Home Mount Tow Bars # RM-035 along with the Roadmaster Nighthawk All-Terrain Tow Bar # RM-676 if you want to match that setup. Do you have the rest of your flat tow components picked out already?

I don't have the rest of the stuff pick out yet. I do have one more question. The HK Offroad shackle kit attaches to the front bumper horns. Is this safe? I am not finding good reliable information about it.

@MatthewB as long as it is flat tow rated it is safe. I don't know much about it myself, I just searched around to identify it for you. I would contact the manufacturer to make sure it is rated for flat towing. I'm assuming it is based on the picture we have and the forums I found it in but it is best to be sure. Let me know if you need anything else!

@RobinH according to HKOffroad's site, it says "Used for solid recovery points and Flat Towing the Jeep." However most tow bar base plate kits I see attach to the frame. HKOffroad kit attaches to just the bump front horns and not the frame. Any advice on this would be appreciated. For a piece of mind, I am now looking at the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms.

@MatthewB if they say it is rated for flat towing I would take their word for it. Companies don't take that lightly, and certainly don't want to say it will work and then pay for lawsuit when it rips off and you lose your vehicle. If you don't care about having shackles for D-rings or other purposes then the # RM-521453-5 will work just as well and cost about the same as the shackle tab kit along with the Roadmaster adapters.
