Troubleshooting RV Door Magnetic Switch That Keeps Going Out

Updated 04/16/2025 | Published 04/14/2025

Question:

My magnetic reed switch has a mind of its own in that it continues to work fine then decides not to close to bring the steps IN! I have found using a small bar style magnet to activate the switch will bring the steps in “usually” therefore I think the connection between the door side magnet and the actual wall mount switch is flawed but its been in same location for at least 5 years I have replaced the switch at least twice….Question is three part: Do the magnets lose strength ? Are there options to use a stronger magnet? On this ‘12 Tiffin Phaeton, is this LC301694 the correct item for replacement?

Hey Bill, thanks for reaching out!

If you're able to activate the switch with a standalone bar magnet then that is a good indicator that the magnet is weak, so you'll want to replace it.

These are pretty universal, so if your current magnets look like this then you can definitely use the Replacement Door Switch for Lippert Electric Coach Step # LC301694.

Over time magnets can lose strength, but having to replace it twice in 5 years is pretty excessive. Magnets only demagnetize in certain situations, and from what I'm seeing, I think your issue is either heat or shock (like from the door slamming open/close). If you have a really strong magnet you can try to remagnetize the door side of things, but if that doesn't work then you can use the replacement I mentioned above.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks Jon, I have no idea much the weak magnet’s pull should be to start nor how much stronger should the remagnetizing magnet be? I didn’t see the LC301694 description set forth the “pull strength which would mimic the original…..I’m happy to try Rejuvenate the door side but sure would appreaciate your further guidance.

@BillH I don't have the answers to those questions, I was just offering a possible solution that gave you a way to potentially stop spending money and replacing parts. To my knowledge, you'll have to have a strong magnet and run that magnet on the magnet you're wanting to magnetize in the same direction. I have no idea if it will work or not - just a suggestion.
