Updated 06/02/2025 | Published 03/31/2025

Question:

Hello, on a 2022 Toyota Highlander we installed a 55245. Does the vehicles computer need to be flashed to turn on/ activate the wiring harness after it is installed?

Hey Mike, thanks for reaching out!

You won't need to have the 2022 Highlander flashed after installing the Curt T-Connector # C55245. This installs on a vehicle that already has the factory tow package so it should activate after installing the fuse.

If you're having issues with the plug working after the installation, then I recommend removing the Curt plug and using a circuit tester to test the pins on the OEM plug to see if the functions are getting that far.

Let me know what you find!

Instructions don't mention a fuse that's noted in your comments. Where does this go? Other brands mention a converter-is there one and where does it go? None shown in the Curt C55245 picture. My Highlander is the LE AWD 3.5V6 gas 2022 without the tow package, but the oil coolers and under vehicle trailer wiring pigtail plug is there. Recent Highlander engines are equipped for towing but most don't have a hitch or added wiring which you sell. Note that the towing package option from Toyota is listed as: the hitch, 4 wire tail light harness and a separate converter wire with box, rear bumper panel inserts/plugs to allow the receiver higher thru the rear bumper-an expensive endeavor installed by Toyota(perhaps a $1500-$2500 project). I'm told the 7 wire system is even more costly and involved.

@MikeT The instructions for the Curt T-Connector # C55245 actually have a photo showing which position to place the fuse. I can't add any photos to the comment section at this point in time, but hopefully we get that ability in the future. If you check out the linked instructions it's on the top right. To add a fully-functional 7-Way, we actually have the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness w Brake Controller Adapter # TK57VR you can use instead. This has a plug for your vehicle, but then also requires running some wires and splicing them to complete the install. If you need help with a wiring installation, I recommend checking out the linked installer locator tool to find shops in your area that can do it for you.

@JonG What about the converter box/wire that pairs with the trailer pigtail - not shown in the C55245 photo. Is it a separate wire harness I need for my 4 wire install? Some youtubes show disassembly of the driverside rear seat wall panel behind the cupholders to get at the converter connection. Toyota install has 2 harnesses, do you?

@JonG The Curt T-Connector # C55245 doesn't have a box, but that's because it's for a Highlander that has the factory tow package (which would already have one installed). For the kit that DOES come with the box, you'll need the Curt # C56RV instead.
