Does Brake Output Circuit of 7-Way Need to Be Active for Curt Echo to Function

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/17/2025

Question:

I’m installing a Curt echo wireless brake controller on my ford ranger. I do not have a 12 vol power wire currently connected to my 7 pain truck re eptacle. The trailer brakes on on a 10 gauge wire T terminating at the trailer 7 point plug. Question: I’m assuming I can run a 10 gauge wire from my battery, thru a circuit breaker to the terminal that matches my trailer blue wire terminal,, or do I run it to the center terminal on the Curt echo? What size circuit breaker do I need, 30 or 40 amps? Thanks, Larry

Hey Larry, the Curt Echo # C51180 does not need the blue wire circuit to be completed at all on the vehicle side as it basically provides that circuit. It does need to have the 12 volt power circuit active though so you would need to have the pin in the 1:00 position connected to the vehicle battery through 10 gauge wire like part # 10-1-1 and a breaker like part # 9510.

Hey Larry, how did things go getting the 12-volt power wire and circuit breaker set up for your Curt Echo brake controller? Your update could make it easier for others wiring the same setup on their trucks.
