Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2022 Ford F-150 Without Factory Tow Package

Updated 11/21/2024 | Published 11/02/2024

Question:

I have a 2022 f150 XLT 4x4 with no towing package. I want to install a class V receiver and a 7 pin harness. I cannot find any wiring products that fit. Im not sure if there is a difference in the vehicle side plugs between the newer generation and last gen f150s . What do you recommend?

Hi Alexander; assuming you have the factory step bumper you can use the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # DT35MR you were looking at. For the wiring, I would check to see if you have the factory wiring harness plugged into the back of the dummy plug on your bumper. If you do you can pull the dummy plug and add the # HM40975. If it doesn't work as is, you may have to run it by the dealer to activate the tow package circuits.

If you do not have any factory wiring we will have to go the universal route which starts by adding a 4-way. If you have LED tail lights you need the # C63NR and if you have incandescent tail lights # C75WR (will not work on models with backup sensors). Once the 4-way is installed you can upgrade to a 7-way using the # ETBC7.

Thank you for the reply. I have stock 4 pin wiring in place and #ETBC7 is ordered. Once I install this 7 pin wiring, what route do I take to install a brake controller? Will a vehicle specific plug work or does it need to be wired into the universal 7 pin wiring?

@Alexander you will hardwire it since that 7-way it doesn't connect to any factory wiring. If you want to use the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty it would be the # RED52VR.
