Parts Needed to Wire in 7-Way to 2019 Mazda CX-5

Updated 09/29/2024 | Published 09/22/2024

Question:

My son has a Mazda CX-5, I think its a 2019. Hes needing to pull a tiny tear travel trailer, which requires a 7-pole connection. Im not finding a 7-pole connector wiring kit for his vehicle. Is one available? Thank you for your help.

Hey Michael, so to install a 7-way on your 2019 Mazda CXC-5 you'd need to first start with a 4-way kit like the Tekonsha part # 118746 which is custom fit and very reliable. This covers the taillight functions of the trailers and is ready to be used with a 7-way adapter like the # 37185.

If the trailer has brakes that need to be operated as well you'd instead need the 7-way adapter part # ETBC7 and a brake controller like the P3 part # 90195 instead of the 37185. The ETBC7 comes with the same 7-way adapter as the 37185 but also comes with the wiring needed to wire in a brake controller.

Thank you for the information, Jameson. My son corrected me; his Mazda vehicle is a 2017 CX-5 Touring (not a 2019). I don't know if that has an impact on your recommendation. He is being given a teardrop travel trailer that is equipped with electric brakes so, yes, he will ultimately need a brake controller & will need 7-pin wiring to support the electric brakes function. If we buy the 4-pin kit 118746, and the 7-way adapter ETBC7, will it include instructions to guide us thru the custom hard wiring of the 3 wires? Also, would the P3 controller 90195 require custom wiring or will it plug-n-play into an existing connector under the dash? Thanks again for your help.

@MikeC So the year difference doesn't affect any of the parts mentioned. The 4-way kit is an exact fit for your vehicle. I don't have specific wiring instructions for your vehicle but the ETBC7 does come with instructions that will show you how to find the correct wiring to use. Your vehicle doesn't have factory brake controller wiring so this would be the only way it would work. The ETBC7 comes with instructions that also covers the install of the P3.
