Can I Tow A 4,000 lb Boat Using A Hitch Extender?

Updated 01/28/2026 | Published 08/20/2024

Question:

I am wanting to tow a boat with 4000 GTW, and 400lbs tongue weight. I also need a 2 hitch extender roughly 7 total extension length. Knowing these weights and that the extender decreases capacity ratings by 50, can you provide me your product recommendations for both the hitch extender and the hitch itself? Thank you!

Hello Jonathan. I am happy to look into it, but I will need to know the year make and model of the tow vehicle in order to recommend a hitch since they are custom fit. Using extenders is tricky since the weight capacity is reduced by half. Depending on what hitch is available for your vehicle, and the weight rating of that hitch, towing a 4,000 lb boat with a hitch extension may or may not be possible. Let me know your vehicle and I can look into it.

Hey Jonathan, did you get a chance to share your vehicle info so we could narrow down the right hitch and extender for towing your boat? Once you have that, I can help confirm what setup will safely handle your load. Let me know what you find—I'm here if you need a hand figuring it out.

@JesseM I used an extra long heavy duty ball mount to alleviate the issue of adding additional components that could fail. Has been working great for the last 16 months
