Choosing Weight Distribution Hitch for Trailer With 7,850 lb GVWR

Updated 06/11/2024 | Published 05/31/2024

Question:

Our new trailer has a GVWR 7850. Hitch weight 581. I’ve been told if water tank is full and camper loaded … hitch weight is around 830. I was going to go with Curt 17301 6k-8k with 600-800 hitch. Now I’m thinking Curt 17302 ..8k-10k with 800 to 1000. Is it better to be on low side or high side of numbers?

In this case I would go with the low side. Odds are you wont' be completely maxed out and sitting at 830 lbs. As soon as some of that water is gone you will also be under the 800 lb mark. The # 17302 may give you a rough and rigid ride since fully loaded you'd be right at the bottom of the tongue weight range. This makes the 17301 the better choice. Also, it looks like the 17301 has been discontinued so we no longer carry it.

Before making a decision I do recommend weighing your actual setup with a tongue weight scale like # e99044 or using one of the methods outlined in the article below. It is also worth noting that neither of these systems have sway control.

A better choice would be the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control # FA94-00-1061. Not only does this add in the sway control with the brackets, the tongue weight range is 600-1,000 lbs. This is more in line with the tongue weight on your trailer. Fastway is also made by Equal-i-zer who is known for their high quality WDH systems.

Hi, I borrowed a hitch scale . With fresh water tanks full and camper loaded it’s #1100. With fresh water tanks empty and camper loaded it’s #950. I would like to stay with curt because I have a curt 17301 that I’ve been using and like it …Now I know it’s undersized. I pull with 3/4 truck and 3/4 ton Suburban…never needed anti-sway with #7600 loaded trailer. Would 17302 work with this hitch weight? On long trips I don’t haul with water tanks full . I would like to fill tanks on short trips. I’m also planning on buying two…each set up for my tow vehicles. Curt is more inline on what I wanted to spend on two.

@TimP you can use the Curt 17302 but you're going to be outside of the range at 1,100 lbs so it won't be as effective.
