We offer three different brands of 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch for your 2014 Volkswagen GTI (visible on the link provided) and while several do require minor trimming of the heat shield for installation the popular Curt # C11000 does not. My contact at Curt confirmed that this hitch will install on your 2014 Volkswagen GTI without drilling or need to trim the heat shield.
Hitch installation on many vehicles can be made easier by temporarily lowering the exhaust to provide more working room but in many cases this is a matter of preference. Lowering an exhaust is a fairly simple matter of removing one or more rubber shock-mount hangers which are returned to their original position once the hitch is bolted into place.
The written hitch installation instructions are provided for your reference as are several articles concerning general hitch installation tips. Do please note that installation requires a torque wrench to tighten the included mounting hardware to the manufacturer's specifications as indicated in the instructions.
If you will be using a hitch-mount accessory item like a bike rack or cargo carrier you need to select only compatible Class I items. You can carry only 2 bikes on a Class I hitch (regardless of the rack's capacity) and the total combined weight of any other items loaded on the hitch must not exceed the 200-lb tongue weight limit. Bike racks and carriers must be used with a stabilizing strap # 18050 in order to retain your Curt warranty.
I have included links to Class I bike racks and Class I cargo carriers in case these are in your plans.
