Question:

I am trying to decide what baseplate would work if I have a blue ox tow bar. Does it have to be Blue Ox or can it be universal. 2005 F250 super duty crew cab short bed. Thanks

You do not have to use the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX2177 on your 2005 Ford F-250 if you don't want to. However, you will need an adapter to use a Blue Ox tow bar with a different base plate brand. For example, if you would rather use the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # 4403-1 with removable arms all you need is the Blue Ox Tow Bar to Roadmaster EZ5, MS, and MX Base Plates Adapter Brackets # BX88185.

Just trying to keep my budget down. I found 10k blue ox tow bar and brake. So need baseplate so would like any suggestion you might have for the final piece to the puzzle. Based on Cost

@Paul Based on cost the best choice is the Blue Ox listed above. Although the other two options are less on their own, adding in the adapter pushes the price higher. The only reason I would spend more and get the Roadmaster over the Blue Ox is the removable arms. If you don't care about the arms permanently sticking out on the front then the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit is your solution.

do they make a generic base plate that works with all vehicles so dont have to buy a specific base plate each time for each vehicle I have to tow. Thanks

@Paul Blue Ox makes the Heavy-Duty Universal Bolt-On Adapter Tabs # BX88266. However, most bumpers will need to be reinforced or modified to use this.
