if i am understanding this correctly, i do not have to remove the factory hitch. this is added to the current system?

You are correct, the Torklift hitch part # TLD1108-30 that fits your 2017 Ram 3500 does put a hitch opening below your factory hitch to give you a heavy duty dual hitch setup.
