Recommended Flat Towing Set Up for a 2017 Ram 2500

Updated 12/25/2022 | Published 12/23/2022

Question:

I have a 2017 Ram 2500 and I am an RV transporter. I have close to 700k miles on my truck and I am wanting to get a flat tow system to make it easy to get my truck home when it breaks down. What flat tow systems do you recommend? Also if a system says 10,000 or 10,500 pounds will those work since my truck weighs less than 10,000. Thanks

To flat tow your 2017 Ram 2500 you are going to need a tow bar, base plate kit, wiring harness, braking system, and a high low adapter. I have listed all of the parts you will need below and attached any installation videos we may have. Yes, all of the 10,000 lbs tow bars and other components will work with your Ram even though it is under 10,000 lbs.

Tow Bar and Safety Chains - Roadmaster Blackhawk 2 Tow Bar item # RM-422 and item # RM-653

Base Plate Kit - Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit - Fixed Arms item # RM-296-2

Wiring Harness - Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit item # RM-15267

Supplemental Braking System - Blue Ox Patriot Radio Frequency Portable Braking System item # BLU37TR and the 12 Volt Outlet Kit, 20 amps item # RM-9332 if you do not have an available accessory outlet.

High Low Adapter - The tow bar needs to be within 3" of level. If you measure the height of the inside top of the hitch receiver tube on your RV, and the height difference is more than 3 inches above/below the base plate tab height, you'll need a high/low adapter. I have linked a FAQ article that explains all this in more detail along with our selection of adapters.
