Best Flat Tow Set Up For 2015 GMC Terrain

Question:

I am setting up to flat tow my 2015 Terrain with a 2021 Class C. I’m about to purchase the Roadmaster baseplate 523163-1 and the Roadmaster RM-520 tow bar. I’m confused about the connection between the two. Do I need to purchase “clevises” or are they included with one or the other components? Also I have see the clevises listed as either 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch. Can you tell me which I would need? If you have better product suggestions please advice. Thanks!

Good question, and for your 2015 GMC Terrain, the Roadmaster EZ base plates # 523163-1 require crossbar attachment # 910021-00 instead of clevises, so it is an extra part and a bit more difficult to connect than base plates that have arms which allow a direct connection to the tow bar. Instead of that, the best option is to use Blue Ox base plates and a tow bar which connects directly to it; I'll go ahead and list out below exactly what you'll need for your 2015 GMC Terrain

- Base Plate Kit: Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1689

- Tow Bar: etrailer SD Non-Binding Tow Bar for Blue Ox Base Plates # e47ZR

- Wiring Kit: Roadmaster 4-Diode Wiring Kit # RM-152-1676-7

- 4-Cylinder Engine Fuse Bypass # RM-76517
OR
- V6 Engine Fuse Bypass # RM76511

- Supplemental Braking System: Demco SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251

The Blue Ox base plates have arms that are removable so they'll be hidden when you aren't flat towing, and the etrailer SD tow bar connects right to it without any other parts needed. It has a 6,000 lb capacity which is well more than what your Terrain weighs, and comes with integrated safety cables and an adjustable tilting head so a high-low adapter won't be needed.

As for the rest, I really like the Roadmaster diode wiring kit because it is designed to prevent any type of electrical feedback, keeping your Terrain's electrical system safe. And for the braking system, the Stay-IN-Play DUO is by far the best option, and the reason for that is it gives you braking proportional to that of your motorhome. So when you hit the brakes on your motorhome, your Terrain is going to get the same amount of braking power. This results in much smoother braking than most systems which send out a pre-set amount of braking power, giving you a more comfortable and easier-to-control ride when flat towing.
