Diameter of Threads On 1/4 & 5/16 Curt Threaded Quick Links

Updated 07/12/2022 | Published 07/10/2022

Question:

Hi - I need a quicklink which will hook into my safety chains which have an interior space of 3/8. I am looking at the ones labeled 5/16 diameter such as item #C82900. Is the 5/16 diameter the measurement of the threaded portion which is wider than the body of the link? If not, will this fit? Otherwise I see a 1/4 quicklink C82610 which I am sure would fit. The load rating on this is 880 pounds. Is this generally a sufficient load rating for a small trailer with a 14 foot sailboat lightweight fiberglass, no motor? I dont have an exact weight of the trailer. My chains are 3/16 diameter and I need to put an extension on them. Thanks.

Expert Reply:

The widest portion on the threads of the 5/16" Curt Threaded Quick Link # C82900 7/16". So you will not be able to fit it inside the 3/8" space on your current chains.

The 1/4" Curt Threaded Quick Link # C82610 is 11/32" at its threaded portion. With using 2 of these links your trailer should weigh less than 1,760lbs. You would have to get the trailer and sailboat total weight to ensure you are not exceeding the weight rating.
