Question:
Is their an easy way to figure out by measuring the tire to see if you have a 5 inch wide or 6 inch wide rim that you need.

The only sure way to determine the width of the rim you currently have would be to pull the tire off of it and get a measurement. Your local tire shop should be able to do this for you for very little cost.
If the wheel has spokes that would allow a tape measure or ruler to pass through, you could take the measurement from bead seat to bead seat, which would be the width of rim you need. I have provided a photo and a diagram showing the measurement you will need to take, but it will be fairly difficult to get with the tire still on the wheel.
